- Guest blogger Felicity Boyd Enders: Martin Luther King Day
January 18, 2010 | 10:27 pm
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of [...]

- From Darkness to Light, from Depression to Joy by Andrea Een
January 7, 2010 | 6:48 am
Depression is a devastating illness with many root causes, some of them genetic. This summer I participated in a wonderful healing program called, "Resilience Training" which was developed by Dr. Henry Emmons at the at the Penny George Institute of Health and Healing at Abbott Northwestern Hospital.
Here is my story which I presented [...]
- Happy New Year! BUT… by Tracy Davis for Lampe Law Group
December 31, 2009 | 9:17 am
This isn’t exactly a public service announcement, but it never hurts to be reminded: Attorney Tim Morisette has posted some DUI cautions (something to keep in mind all the time, but which may be particularly relevant over the next few days).
We all know that “stuff happens”. If it happens to you, call LampeLaw at 507-663-1211. [...]
- Got law? by Tracy Davis for Lampe Law Group
December 13, 2009 | 2:37 pm
I brought a large pitcher of Kool-Aid over to the Lampe Law office a couple of months ago, and ever since, they’ve demonstrated a new enthusiasm for jumping into the social media/blogging pool. In addition to the firm’s new forays onto Facebook and Twitter, the partners (Lance Heisler, Tim Morisette, and Maren Swanson) have started [...]

Watch closely as there is a quiz at the end of this [...]

By Griff Wigley, on February 8th, 2010
Back in early December when we launched the LG membership plan, I blogged that my goal for the week was 25 memberships. That was a typo. I meant to say “for the upcoming quarter.” Heh.
Today, we hit 25 memberships: 8 businesses/organizations and 17 individuals/couples. Let’s call them the Founding Members!
To celebrate our modest success, I’m turning off the ad banners for a while to give everyone a break. (They’ll be back!)
Founding members include:

Brothers Jon Feldman and Matt Feldman from Cannon River Tree Care were pruning trees on Bridge Square this morning in the middle of our gorgeous snowfall. Jon said that winter is the perfect time to prune trees.
Tim Freeland at KYMN has blogged that schools are closing early. Kids love to climb trees so why not give them some rope, saws and clippers and have them trim your trees today? If they fall, the snow cover should protect them just fine. If they cut off a digit or two, no biggie, the Northfield Hospital has a great surgical team, plus it helps the local medical economy.

The “Friday Memo,” written by Northfield City Administrator Joel Walinski and various department heads and other City staff, summarizes the staff and department activities for the week. The Friday memos are published and archived in PDF form at the bottom of the City Administrator’s web page.
Since it’s the first week of the month, Friday’s memo also includes the monthly Boards & Commissions report. Additional items of note this week include:
You can find all the above on the memo page for the week.
There will be a City Council meeting and work session on Tuesday, Feb. 9. You can view all upcoming City meetings on the City calendar.

A couple of parents of local teens have alerted me that Synergy Dance Club (Facebook group) events at the new Onyx/Olmeca night club in Burnsville are increasingly drawing Northfield’s teens for their special shows, ages 16-20. The next one is this Friday, a Valentine’s Day event.
As you can see from their Valentine’s Day poster, girls are encouraged to dress up in sleazewear (that links to my June 2008 blog post with 61 comments). Take a look at some of the photos posted to Synergy’s Facebook group. (Anyone with a Facebook account can view them.)
The dancing often includes freak dancing (simulated sex acts), which schools nationwide have been trying to crack down on. The videos posted to Synergy’s Facebook group show the dance.
Should parents be worried? Or is this a way for teens to safely release sexual urges on the dance floor instead of elsewhere?

I got a tweet in mid-January from NHS ED Hayes Scriven that the Jan-Mar 2010 Northfield Visitors Guide was available. The flash version is embedded on the NHS home page
But I can’t seem to find it on the Northfield Area Chamber of Commerce site nor on their Convention and Visitors Bureau’s Visiting Northfield web site. It’s not linked to or mentioned on the City of Northfield’s visitor page and I couldn’t find it on the Northfield.org or NDDC blogs either.
I know, I know, the print version is the main thing and it’s distributed about town. But why not make it easy for Northfielders to email it, blog it, tweet it, and post to their Facebook Walls about it so that their non-Northfield friends and colleagues take a look at it? It costs virtually zero to do this. Plus, the thing is full of great photos, BTW. Heh.
So allow me to do my part. Here’s the PDF version, courtesy of LoGroNo. Here’s the Flash version, courtesy of Hayes Scriven and the NHS. Go forth and multiply it, by which I do NOT mean what Brits mean when they say go forth and multiply.

There’s an ice palace in the Carleton Arb, just off the start of the Ann Sipfle Memorial Ski Trail. Candles are stuck on the sides of the inside walls.
Looks like a great place for a romantic night under the stars. And with Valentine’s Day coming up… hmmm, this gives me a great idea. Cheap, too.

Eric Johnson sent me these photos last week of an owl perched on his patio porch light.
What kind of owl is it? (Hint: it doesn’t hoot.)

Susan Hvistendahl alerted me to an article titled A Guy’s Take on Love and Romance in the Jan/Feb issue of Girlfriends magazine published by I 35 Target Media, a sibling of the Northfield News.
It features a roundtable discussion (“chatfest”) about “marriage, dating, romance and relationships in general” with some Northfield-area guys including Hans Olsen, Mike Miller, Adam Andreasen, Nathan Kuhlman, Ed Kuhlman, Drew Weis, James Schlicting, Jason Hoffman and Dan Freeman.

I spent most of my time chatting and eating at the Rice County Humane Society’s Annual Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser at the Eagles Club on Sunday since volunteer Bridgette Hallcock was there taking photos. Hopefully, she’ll publish those soon.
RCHS board member Kathy Jasnoch, pictured here with volunteer Sandy Vesledahl, commented here that over 400 people attended. Here are four more photos:

About 18 months ago, Tracy blogged about Northfielder Barbara Burke’s book deal.
After a few twists and turns, it happened yesterday. Barbara wrote at the end of a blog post:
Today, February 1, 2010, is the day the beautiful hardcover edition published by Hay House is released in the US. The book is sold in India and will be available in the UK in March, as will the German translation.
Barbara’s book is The Napkin, The Melon & The Monkey: How to Be Happy and Successful by Simply Changing Your Mind. Hay House’s (publisher) Heal Your Life website has a blog post on the book here.

I attended the first hour and the last hour of Monday’s Northfield City Council goal setting session held at the Northfield Hospital Board room from 5-10 pm. The husband/wife team of Richard Fursman and Irina Fursman, Global Synergy Group (GSG), were the meeting facilitators.

I got an invitation from my mentee, Chad Dougherty, to attend his Industrial Tech class at the Northfield Middle School on Monday to watch the CO2 car races. IT instructor Tim Biegert and Instructional Educational Assistant Lance Poole graciously allowed me to take some photos and video.
For the CO2 races, each student shapes a block of wood into a car body shape, drilling holes for the axles and the CO2 cartridge. Considerable sanding, sealing, and painting in involved. Students attach two eyehooks to the bottom of each car so that a string can be used as a guide to keep them on the track.
On the day of the race, student cars are paired up to race against each other but the key metric is the elapsed time for each car. Mr. Biegert inserts the CO2 cartridges and a student triggers a mechanism that punctures the seal on the cartridges and sends them down the track at 20-50 MPH, taking about a second to finish. Finishing times are automatically recorded to a computer and displayed on the screen, with rankings likewise updated after each race.
It was quite an exciting event to watch and clearly exciting for the students. Here are 6 more photos and a 10-second video clip of Chad’s race.

At last Thursday’s Northfield.org WinterNet party, Paul Niemisto pinned a Vintage Band Festival 2010 button on me in a shameless marketing ploy, trying to promote the Aug 5-8 event.

I’ve been a member of Northfield Athletic Club (formerly Olympus Athletic Club) since the building was constructed in the late 70s. Therese and Jeff Smiens purchased the club from Robin and Chad Johnson a few weeks ago and changes (new signage this week) are starting to appear. Does the City Council want citizen feedback on how it performed on its 2009 goals? It’s not clear, as there hasn’t been any effort that I know of to get feedback prior to tonight’s goal-setting session from 5-9 pm at the Northfield Hospital Board Room.

It’s not clear from the story in the Sat. Nfld News, New Northfield hotel feasible, market study indicates, how the $9,600 decision was made to hire an Atlanta-based consulting company, Highland Group Hotel Investment Advisors, to conduct the study.
A search of the phrase “Highland Group” on the City’s website only comes up with the disbursements to the company in October and in December. I can’t find anything that indicates there’s been Council discussion of this. I checked with Jim Gleason, new president of the Northfield Area Chamber of Commerce/Convention and Visitors Bureau, who indicated that he wasn’t aware of the market study being done.
I’m not ready to argue that conducting a study is a bad idea. I’m questioning the process. It seems like the Council should be involved in a public discussion about an expenditure like this, especially one that’s likely to ruffle the feathers of local business owners. According to the Nfld News, City Administrator Joel Walinski said study was done to facilitate the conversation among local developers and hotel owners. Seems backwards to me.

Doug Bratland and I (photo by Jane McWilliams) joined forces with Alex Beeby and David Gonnerman to form Team Frost Whores to compete in the trivia contest at Thursday night’s Northfield.org WinterNet party at the Contented Cow. We whupped ‘em all!
I very much appreciated 1) a personal invitation to the party from Board Chair Nate White; and 2) Jessica Peterson White (the "Quiz Mistress") including this question in the trivia contest: “What local web site referred the most traffic to Northfield.org during 2009?”

The “Friday Memo,” written by Northfield City Administrator Joel Walinski and various department heads and other City staff, summarizes the staff and department activities for the week. The Friday memos are published and archived in PDF form at the bottom of the City Administrator’s web page.
Friday’s memo can be found on the memo page for the week. There are some interesting tidbits this week, like the fact that the City needs to spend down the monies available for streetscape enhancements (we have some good people working on recommendations ), and information about the new Cooperative Facilities Bonding Bill being introduced at this year’s MN legislative session; if passed, the bill could provide a significant incentive for regional cooperation, and be a source of funding for facilities.
The City Council is having a “goals meeting” in the board room of the Northfield Hospital on Tuesday, Jan. 26 at 5:00pm. At the time of this writing there is no further information available about the meeting.

Reginaldo Haslett-Marroquin and the Rural Enterprise Center here in Northfield are featured in today’s Strib in an article titled Project Cluck.
As director of the Rural Enterprise Center (REC) in Northfield, Haslett-Marroquin has been training Latino immigrant "agripreneurs" to raise chickens in Northfield and Cannon Falls for the past three years. Many are already involved in community vegetable gardening.

I saw Northfielder Ryan Heinritz working out at the Northfield Athletic Club last night and he had some news: he’d just been selected to be the new Executive Director of the Paradise Center for the Arts in Faribault. I guess they liked the fact that, under pressure, he could eat a lot of goldfish crackers and whistle in a relatively short period of time.

Yesterday’s Strib has a letter to the editor by Northfielder and frequent LoGroNo commenter, John George, on “how earthquakes can be God’s judgment for sin.” (See full text below.) I’m hoping John will chime in here with a longer explanation.
As an atheist, it makes no sense to me, of course, and I last blogged about God’s role in natural disasters back in 2007.
But for those of you who do believe in God and who might quickly dismiss John’s assertions, consider how often you pray or participate in prayers that ask God to intercede in some way in your physical world or the physical world of others.

No, not Northfield Public Library Board Chair Margit Johnson, though she, too, is getting up there. (I know, she hardly looks a day over 75.)
It’s Northfield’s Carnegie Library that’ll be hitting the century mark this year. On Monday, Margit stopped by my corner office at GBM to show me the planning document for the centennial celebration. See her guest column in today’s Nfld News, Library building celebrates 100 years in 2010.

There’s been another local fracas recently referencing Minnesota’s Open Meeting Law. I thought I’d take a crack at offering some relevant links, all in one place, to help make sense of it all.
The text of the law itself is found in Minn. Stat. §13D.01. However, as often happens, what people think the law says may not be the way the OML has been interpreted by the Minnesota courts, and court interpretations form precedent that is used in applying the law to other cases. People should be cautioned against making declarative statements about whether the OML was violated in a particular situation based only on their own reading of the law.
