Steve Clark's 12 guidelines for bike-friendly communities (thanks to Bruce Anderson):

1. Create short-cuts for bikes and pedestrians
2. Assure access everywhere
3. Wide lanes and paths for social interactions
4. Lower speed limits for vehicular traffic
5. Safe refuge islands on highways
6. Ample bike parking
7. Short signal cycles
8. Advance boxes
9. Mixed-use development
10. No free right turns
11. Good signage and marking
12. Public awareness campaigns

Video from Steve's presentation will (hopefully) be available on www.northfieldtrails.org soon.
