Cannon River Watershed Partnership Receives State Grant

Vintage postcard view of Cannon RiverThe Cannon River Watershed Partnership has been selected by the MPCA to receive and Environmental Assessment Grant to work on Low Impact Development Ordinances in the Watershed. The grant will go into effect in July 2007 and run through June 2009.

The timing is fortuitous, since the City is updating its land use regulations. Though the CRWP’s mission involves many municipalities other than Northfield, I hope that the City and CRWP both put serious effort into trying to get their planning processes to work in tandem. (The stated timelines for each organization lead me to conclude that the City’s process will be done early next year, but the CRWP may not have their preferred ordinances done till some time later.)

The Cannon River is one of only seven Minnesota rivers with the “Wild & Scenic” designation from the DNR, which makes it a valuable resource to have in our community.

what would it take for the dam to be taken out downtown and the river made healthy again? I don’t even know where to begin finding out about it, and trying to help make it happen.

As channelized as the river is downtown, I don’t know that taking out the dam (which is viewed as an amenity by some) is an obvious improvement.
