New for Winter Walk 2008: A Parade

In case you’re living under a rock, the 10th Annual Winter Walk is this Thursday. See the Chamber’s Winter Walk page for the entire schedule.
But it seems to be a well-kept secret that this year, for the very first time, there will be a
Winter Walk Holiday Parade
that starts at 5 PM at Econofoods [...]

Ross and his new band, the New Moon Trio

LoGroNo co-host Ross Currier has a new band. The New Moon Trio performed at the Contented Cow on Friday night.
L to R in photo: Bass - Ross Currier; guitar - Justin London; drums - Lance Heisler.
See the New Moon Trio blog for a video clip.

The plaza gets a monolith

Two granite fixtures have been added to the Harvest sculpture area of the Sesquicentennial Legacy Plaza: one provides a narrative background on the plaza and sculpture. The other is a plain monolith. Is there a plan for the latter, or does the monolith have deep symbolic meaning that once again escapes me?

I think Chris Riemenschneider is a Genius

Remember the Legacy Amendment? I blogged about it back on October 11th. Well, it passed.
In today’s Star Tribune Local Music Columnist Chris Riemenschneider offered some suggestions on how to use it. As I said in the title of this post, I think the guy is a genius.
Chris points out that that the Minnesota music community [...]

Carleton’s ‘Save the Penis’ campaign goes limp

In September, LG commenter Anthony Pierre kept bugging me to take note of what was happening with the recently poured sidewalk at the Carleton College corner of the intersection at 2nd and Division. I drove by, saw the construction, and saw nothing unusual. I just assumed the workers were digging up the new concrete in [...]

NEG’s high tech distribution system

I saw By All Means Graphics head-honcho Rob Schanilec distributing the Nov. 2008 issue of the Northfield Entertainment Guide (PDF) on Friday afternoon. The NEG’s little red wagon does the job for the downtown distribution points.

Babes, yes, but also WUMiN

Members of WUMiN, the Writers’ Union Moms In Northfield, met for their weekly meeting yesterday at the Goodbye Blue Monday.

I asked to become a member of their group but alas, they said I don’t [...]

What are these babes up to?

These women are scheming.
L to R: Lora Steil, Deanna Kuennen, Chris Ellison, Robbie Wigley, and Michelle Millenacker. Oh and there’s a little babe in there, too.
What might they be up to?

Forget Politics this Weekend and Check Out Some Art

I just noticed this sign in Bridge Square on my way home this evening. It reminded me that it is the weekend of the South Central Minnesota Art Tour.
There are open studios in Northfield, Faribault, and Owatonna. The Northfield Area artists who are opening their studios are Jennifer Wolcott, Joyce Francis, Amy Merrit, Anne Larson, [...]

Have you heard of the ‘Sesquicentennial Legacy Plaza’? Be there TODAY

The phrase ‘Sesquicentennial Legacy Plaza’ is the new name for what’s been called (in various permutations) the Water St. parking lot pedestrian promenade.
I drove by Wed. aft and saw the posters in the new Ames Mill-shaped kiosk.

The description of the Plaza reads in part:
The Sesquicentennial Legacy Plaza, with the sculpture “Harvest” as [...]

The Arts: Quality of Life, Good Investment or Waste of Time?

In today’s Star Tribune, Minnetonka’s City Manager John Gunyou has an opinion piece titled “The case for the arts in Legacy Admendment“. Gunyou advocates for the arts in the Legacy Amendment.
According to the Minnesota Independent:

If approved the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment will implement a 0.375-percent sales tax increase beginning July 1, 2009. More [...]

“Slow Food” in Northfield

As a logical followup to my earlier post on the “Eat Local” challenge, I was reading a report of the Slow Food Nation conference in San Francisco earlier this month.
The “slow food” movement, which started in Italy in 1986 to protest a McDonald’s in central Rome, has picked up momentum, with foodie notables like Michael [...]

How about some al fresco whimsical art sculpture for Northfield’s new Riverwalk Arts Quarter?

Robbie and I’ve been in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico the past week, vacationing with some friends from Kenyon, MN. (You may have been wondering about the lack of quality/quantity of my participation here on LoGroNo. Now you know why.)

The oceanside boardwalk in the center of Puerto Vallarta is called the Malecón, home to [...]

Could Northfield Use a “Co-Working” Site?

A recent article in the Chicago Tribune about the rising trend of “co-working” space (shared space where the self-employed or telecommuting employee can plug in to work) got me thinking again about the benefits of such a space for Northfield. Is there a market?
The local coffeehouses are serving this function now, but I [...]
