New for Winter Walk 2008: A Parade

In case you’re living under a rock, the 10th Annual Winter Walk is this Thursday. See the Chamber’s Winter Walk page for the entire schedule.
But it seems to be a well-kept secret that this year, for the very first time, there will be a
Winter Walk Holiday Parade
that starts at 5 PM at Econofoods [...]

Supporting downtown Northfield retail whether I like it or not

This week I was pressured (I’m not sayin’ by who) into getting rid of a perfectly fine pair of 30 year-old moccasins in favor of a new pair from Randy Malecha at Willie’s Shoe Repair.
I plan to put my slightly used pair on eBay but I’m willing to entertain any reasonable local offer first.

Wells Fargo takes down hazardous trees

On Wed. morning, Chris Ash alerted us to the takedown of some gigantic trees adjacent to his house. H&H Tree Service in Dundas took down the two big cottonwoods with the help of a crane sub-contractor. Here’s the email from Chris:
Lisa and I live at 417 Union (5th and Union), if you get [...]

What’s up with this tear-down?

Sharp-eyed reader Steve Wilmot alerted me to this building being torn down along the railroad tracks behind the Quarterback.
Anyone have any details about the building and what’s in the works?

As Economy Sputters, Northfield Businesses Tighten Belts and Push Promotions

Myles Radtke, a student in Doug McGill’s journalism class at Carleton College, has done a nice piece on downtown retailers in the current economic climate, titled As Economy Sputters, Northfield Businesses Tighten Belts and Push Promotions (PDF - full text below).  In particular, he’s interviewed a wide variety of local experts and allowed them [...]

Mexican food business doubles in size since opening in June

Guadalupe Flores Calderon and her business partner Yuma Gonzalez Gonzalez have seen their enterprise double in size since opening in June, Calderon said last week, and the place does not even have an outdoor sign or full menu.
Their Mexican store and deli has a name, La Vencedora, and most people are drawn into the stark-looking [...]

Digging Deeper into the Local Economy

A good half dozen or so people have been encouraging me to read Bill McKibben’s book “Deep Economy” and Griff and Tracy have been urging me to write a post now and then. So I guess this is at least two birds with one stone.
In case you haven’t read the book, I’ll give you my [...]

Preschool and daycare enrollment down

Barbara Howe, director of Open Door Nursery School on West Third Street, is worried about the number of vacancies in daycares and preschools citywide.
“I think a lot of parents are having to make decisions financially,” Howe said on Tuesday. “There are things that have to go and unfortunately, nursery school is one of them.”
Howe said [...]

NEG’s high tech distribution system

I saw By All Means Graphics head-honcho Rob Schanilec distributing the Nov. 2008 issue of the Northfield Entertainment Guide (PDF) on Friday afternoon. The NEG’s little red wagon does the job for the downtown distribution points.

I stopped by this morning to take some photos, grab some coffee and cookies, and make a donation. Last year, their costume theme was Elvis (photo, above [...]

The grading and clean-up at 2nd and Hwy 3 corner of The Crossing is being done by MNDOT.  Brian O’Connell, City of Northfield Community Development Director, had this blurb in last week’s Friday Memo:
