Speaking of the Trinity (Holy or Unholy)

Bruce Morlan seemed to suggest vague ethical questions about the chance meeting of the three citizen bloggers at one of Northfield’s many fine independent bookstores. If Clifford Green were to ask me about it, I would tell him that it was purely coincidental (I generally try to avoid those two people), without ethical violation (although [...]

Wigley house sold; Peter and Jesse will soon be here

We closed on our house today. Peter Seebach (’seebs’) and Jesse Hajicek (pronounced ‘high check’) bought our house at 1016 Linden St. So.

They used John Ophaug as their attorney at closing. We used [...]

R.I.P: John Pitsavas, Bob Jacobsen

Two well-known Northfielders died yesterday.

If anyone has links or details on the arrangements, please attach a comment.

Neighborhood Relations

In yesterday’s StarTribune, on the front page of the “twin cities + region” section, there was an article about efforts to ease the strain between college renters and permanent residents, “St. Paul colleges work to keep the peace with their neighbors”.
The people interviewed in the article focused on the need for education, every fall. As [...]

Hail again, TV news again

A Fox 9 News crew rolled into downtown this afternoon, doing a story on today’s hailstorm (see Adam Gurno’s blog post on N.org) and a retrospective of the hailstorm from a year ago.  The segment will air at 9 PM tonight — unless, of course, we get more storms in the meantime. Thx [...]

Another film crew pays a visit

I got a call from Alex Beeby this afternoon, alerting me that a crew for Dan Rather Reports was filming on BridgeSquare. By the time I got down there, they were gone, but a closer check of my email revealed a message from Bruce Morlan, alerting me to his post about Bridgewater Township’s meeting [...]

Creating Creatives and Building Communities

There is an interesting article in today’s (July 19th) Wall Street Journal (page D7). Titled “The Impoverishment of American Culture“, it’s a condensed version of the commencement speech given by Dana Gioia at Stanford University on June 17th.
Gioia notes that at the same time pop culture is narrowing (he points out that the Ed Sullivan [...]

My four favorite 4th of July kid photos

These are my favorite photos from last week’s 4th of July festivities. Click to enlarge. I figured we needed something, um, uplifting, at the top of the blog today. See our Northfield photo gallery for the three albums of photos.

Eritrean Fundraising Dinner, May 14 at Chapati

In early April, Norman and Diane Butler invited a small group of Northfielders to a lunch at Chapati. It wasn’t Indian food we ate, however. It was Eritrean, prepared by my neighbors, Bereket Haileab and Friewinne Kaleab. Yum!
The group hatched the idea of having an Eritrean dinner as a fundraiser for American [...]

Don McRae memorial in Bridge Square

A bronze plaque at the foot of this tree in Bridge Square reads “In Memory of Don McRae, 1996.” Don was the1992 recipient of the Joseph Lee Heywood award.
Anyone have a photo of Don?

Ole Store rumors

Northfielder Tom Hayes, owner of The Cruiser liquor store in Burnsville, was the host of the post-Art Crawl party on Friday night at the Ole Store. Read the first paragraph of the flyer for details on what might transpire with the store. The owner of the building, Lavern Rippley, was also at the party.

Edible Art Lives On!

That’s right, I had heard a recent rumor that this immensely popular part of the annual Arts a la Carte event had a brush with extinction this year, only to be rescued in the 11th hour by a group of young artists that included a kid by the name of Phoebe Currier.
Hmmm, that name sounds [...]

When Tracy Gives You Tomatoes, Make Sauce

Sometimes my colleague, Tracy Davis, tosses tomatoes. However, now and then, she serves up some brilliantly spiced Salse di Pomodoro. The later pitch would be the case earlier this week.
Tracy sent me a link to a site that points to a potential economic development tool…the creative class. The assorted analyses tend to focus on rural [...]
