Water St. construction Construction Newsletter #2 Construction Newsletter #2
33 1/3% of the triumvirate was there to chronicle the event, but alas, no other citizens. Maybe the looming thunderstorm scared folks away. (Note the glistening hailstones in the photo on the left, with one huge one just missing me.)

I took a (quite amateurish but hey, I’m learning) video of City Engineer Katy Gehler-Hess (apologies for botching your name, Katie!) explaining what’s been happening the past week, plus what’s up for next.  Her boss, Public Services Director Joel Walinski, chimed in with some tidbits while Community Services Director Brian O’Connell lurked in the background, performing ably as our severe weather spotter.

I couldn’t find PDFs of the map that Katy explains in the video, nor a PDF of the Construction Newsletter #2 flyer that they handed out. I took photos of the latter and added it above (center and right photos). If anyone can point to either of those PDF documents on the City’s or consultant’s web site, please attach a comment with the URL.

Northfield youth featured in America’s Promise Alliance video

Back in late January, I blogged about Northfield being named one of America’s 100 best communities for young people by America’s Promise Alliance.

In a Feb. 1 Northfield News article titled Video highlights Northfield youth by Megan Proft, she wrote:

Northfield youth were highlighted in a recent video produced by America’s Promise, a national collaborative dedicated to the well-being of children and youth. High school students and Mayor’s Youth Council members Ruth Amerman, Sam Ruby and Adrian Lazaro were featured in a video that profiled local youth initiatives, such as the Northfield Union of Youth and the Skateboard Coalition. The video was shown at the Minnesota Summit on Youth Development held on Dec. 5. Soccer coach Jorge Zuccolotto and teachers Bubba Sullivan and Jennifer Lompart were featured in the video too.

Here’s the video, in two parts. Thanks to HCI’s Zach Pruitt for the alert.

Video: the future of the Ames Mill Dam may include a kayak park

This is a video of the second half-hour of Councilor Jon Denison’s Ward 4 meeting at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Saturday morning. At-large Councilor Noah Cashman also participated. This segment is entirely about the plans for the Ames Mill Dam, with a report on the latest developments by Dave Hvistendahl.

I blogged about tearing down the Ames Mill Dam back in August and there was some discussion of how a this area of the river might be suitable for recreational/competitive kayaking, similar to the kayak/canoe park that exists downtown Wausau Wisconsin and the whitewater park planned for the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis.

Watch the video, as planning has progressed considerably since then. Photos below are of downtown Wausau.
