B-b-b-b-bike-to-work day on Bridge Square

Northfield Bike to Work

I wimped out when I got up at 5:30 and saw that it was 44 degrees with winds gusting to 25 mph, but Nonmotorized Transportation Task Force Chair Bill Ostrem (3rd from left) and a group of guys were on Bridge Square with hot coffee, treats, and lots of info. See Tracy’s post from earlier this week for more.

44′s too cold? seriously? are you sure you’re a Minnesotan? that’s shorts weather.

It wasn’t that bad, and the coffee and company was really nice.

However, that wind across my bald head was much more effective in waking me up than the high test coffee.

Griff, we also had the vanpool there for a while, so you could have sought shelter and internet with us. 8-)

I missed it because I came to work at 9 a.m., but I did bike to work! How many people came by for coffee and snacks?

    Bill Ostrem says:

There were about 20-25 people who stopped by. Thanks to Bruce Anderson for coordinating the event!

I’ve been involved with this event the last four years. One thing I enjoy about it is meeting new people and getting to know others better. So, for example, I got to meet Tom Kotula, mailman, with whom I discussed the importance of keeping bikes off the downtown sidewalks; Leah Steinberg, a Carleton grad who lives in town, does not own a car, and gets places on foot; and Scott Klein, who lives in Apple Valley but commutes by bike some days to Malt-O-Meal.

I also enjoyed getting to know Gene Ganske better. Gene rides a bike nearly every day of the year. He has a winter bike outfitted with studded tires. The latter, he says, are pricey at about $65 a tire, but provide excellent traction.
