City sign ordinance permits use of sexual and scatalogical innuendo. Time for a change?

Whitestone Cleaners

The complaints are pouring in to Northfield City Hall about Whitestone Cleaner’s sandwich board that reads “Drop your pants here.”  Some of the citizens are particularly incensed that it’s right across the street from the Main Street Moravian Church.

There are several Northfield area businesses using similar sexual innuendo in their advertising. And others are using scatalogical innuendo.

“This trend is a blight on our city and it really frosts my balls,” said Red Ruffensor, Executive Director of the Northfield Convention and Visitors Bureau. “I will be asking the Northfield Planning Commission to tighten up the sign ordinance.”

The list of area businesses and their slogans which offend some:

  • "Let us remove your shorts," Northfield Electric
  • "Can’t get it up?" Cannon Valley Winching service
  • "Let us strip for you," Dundas Furniture Repair
  • "Get your buns in here," Dundas Bakery
  • "We kick ash," Rice County Air Duct Cleaning
  • "Let us lighten your load," River City Diaper Service
  • "A good flush beats a full house," Cannon Valley Plumbing
  • “A great place to take a leak," Rice County Radiator Service
  • "We’re number one in the number two business," Northfield Sanitation

You know, I could explain “drop your pants here” to my five-year-old. I could even explain “freezing the balls off a brass monkey”; I actually know the nautical origin of the phrase. But I’d have a real hard time explaining “frost my balls”…so thanks for that, Red. If it ever shows up on a sign I’m gonna have to come up with a whopper of an explanation!

I think local businesses are doing everything they can to do something to get noticed, lets not try to take it away. We don’t need to get THAT conservative.

what? really? reeeeeally? i don’t care what anyone says, most of those are funny in that ‘it’s-so-dumb-i-can’t-help-but-laugh’ way. if they are guilty of anything it’s tackiness and bad puns. there’s way worse stuff on tv.

These slogans are just a branch of marketing. I remember a cartoon in the PP a couple years ago showing a typical shopkeeper in his apron standing in front of his small store front. His business name was on the awning- “Al’s Shop For All Those Things You Don’t Need And Have Nowhere To Put.” The caption underneath read, “Al learned early in his retail career that honesty and marketing don’t necessarily go hand in hand.” I still think it is hilarious.
