Art.Org and the Lampe Law Group have announced the “Five Sculpture Project“, in which works of art would be displayed on the pedestal in front of the Law Office at 105 East 5th Street (across from the Rueb ‘N’ Stein).
ArtOrg is bringing together five artists that will create large works in an activity we call the “Five Sculpture Project”. The five sculptures will be exhibited at the pedestal in front of the Lampe Law Group in downtown Northfield, Minnesota. The projected public unveiling of the project will be in the fall of 2010, and thereafter each sculpture will be on display for a period of ten weeks each, or a total “Five Sculpture” display period of one year.
Since late 2008, the Lampe Law Office pedestal has displayed the Mac Gimse work entitled “Between Earth and Sky“. Both the Five Sculpture Project and Art.Org have received partial funding through the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council through the Minnesota arts and cultural heritage fund via the Clean Water, Land, and Legacy Amendment which was adopted after State referendum in November 2008. (The firm also makes a monthly donation to help fund this public art project.)
The partners at Lampe Law Group (Lance Heisler, Tim Morisette, and Maren Swanson) are all very enthusiastic about this project, and are looking forward to the installation of a new work later in the year.
And, in an editorial comment, and with my “civic booster” hat on, I want to hand it to the Lampe Law Group for their direct support of public art and the Northfield arts community via their donation of money and of prominent display space. Thank you!

While I look forward to seeing the next sculptures, I hate to lose Mac’s “Between Earth and Sky”. One day I saw a little boy standing at the sculpture’s base. His cheeks were billowed out and he was blowing up at the sculpture’s turning turbines! In his mind, he was making them spin. That vision will stand in my mind for a long time.
Where will Mac’s sculpture go? Will it stay in Northfield?
I think the “Between Earth and Sky” sculpture is planned to go in at the Mill Towns trailhead in Dundas, by the old Archibald Mill.
It has been great having the sculpture outside our office building. So many people have commented favorably, and what a great way to give much needed exposure to local artists. Keep em coming!!!
I love Tim’s story about seeing the little boy blowing the spinneret thingy. Wish I had a pic or video of that!

We are very excited. In addition to Mac--Ray Jacobson, Sharol Nau, Juan Jose Palacios, and Ed White are also participating in the “Five Sculpture” project. They will each create a work that will measure eight feet tall. The set of sculptures will be unveiled in early fall of 2010. Then, each sculpture will be placed on the pedestal for roughly ten weeks at a time--for a total period of one year.
Mac’s piece on the pedestal now, “Between Earth and Sky”, is destined for the bike trailhead in Dundas, in fact the council in Dundas approved that some time ago. There is still a bit of fund-raising to complete this process--the sculpture in front of Lampe represents only the top section of the completed Dundas installation.
Here is all the info on this ArtOrg Project. Check back to see the project progressing.

It was a gorgeous day yesterday, and when I rode past the sculpture I thought of Tim’s story about the little boy (comment #1). I grabbed my phone and captured a quick 20-second video of the sculpture spinning.
