Heads Up from Nick Naylor

Nick_andPeers.jpgMy family and I recently watched “Thank You for Smoking”. It was a Christmas gift that we received at the big (28 people) gathering we had over at Jennifer and Bill’s home.

In case you haven’t heard, it’s a humorous (but serious) look at a lobbyist for the cigarette industry. Nick Naylor, the cigarette lobbyist, has weekly lunches with an alchohol lobbyist and a gun lobbyist.

At the end of the movie, after much amusement and excitement, Nick has shifted to the cell phone industry. In the closing scene, he’s advising his clients not to comment on any specific studies linking cell phone use to brain cancer but instead to say that the industry is still studying the matter.

I remember an ad that I found in an old magazine, with Ronald Reagan, sitting on a rustic porch dressed in cowboy garb, promoting smoking as an aid in addressing asthma. Maybe we’re just 50 years away on the cell phone issue.

There’s a sequel in the works, Ross. It features lobbyists from the transfat, plastic surgery, and oil companies. It’s true. I read it on the internet.
