Sabbatical week #2: What should Northfielders know about or discuss this week?

Griff…This is a local, state and national issue that needs to be discussed. (Or maybe just a pet peeve.)

The catch phrase, “Not A Problem”. In restaurants, bars, and stores, the staff responds to requests for service with “Not A Problem”. Ask for the check, another beer, or to see a shirt in a different size, and the response is likely to be “Not A Problem”. What the heck is this? Of course it’s not a problem, I’m the CUSTOMER! I’m the reason you’re here. How could my request even be considered a PROBLEM?

The unstated implication of “Not A Problem” is that the request MIGHT be a PROBLEM to the waiter, bartender or clerk. But why would I even go to a business where my request for service might be considered a PROBLEM?

So…All you service people…How about a simple “Yes” or “Of Course” or “You Betcha”.

William, thank you for bringing up this important, yet controversial topic. “Not A Problem” annoys me too–for exactly the reasons you stated.

I am also bothered when servers ask, “Did you leave room for pie?” Try as I may, I can’t come up with a solid, non-crotchety reason for why that is so annoying to me. Maybe it is because “Did you leave room for pie?” is not an honest question. The server is not really wondering if one subtracted the present volume of food in my stomach from the capacity of my empty stomach, one would yield a volume equal or greater to the volume that would be occupied by a piece of pie. No, the real question is “Would you like some dessert?” Next time, please get it right.

  3. In keeping with the local, state, national theme, two things…why do servers ware perfume…to cover the the kitchen and food odors, or to drive away all the asthmatics?

Also, why do we keep voting into political office lawyers and the like when we need people who know how to run a business…running a country is more like running a home family business than running a court room, isn’t it?

William, I’m with you all the way. A related phrase, “No problem”, is also used much too often as a response to “Thank you.” Whatever happened to “You’re welcome”?

Your pet peeve reminded me of one I blogged about many, many moons ago: “How’s Everything Tasting?”

  5. It would be great to discuss where President Obama is going to appear today seeing as how the plane
    is purported to land nearby.

  6. Let me correct that to say on Monday next.

  7. Looks like Pres. Obama is coming to Cannon Falls on Monday.
    Anybody going to see him?
