What a delight to peruse your photographs of the Waterford Iron Bridge! The sensitivity of your eye with this subject amazed me. I love the rusty bolt shot.

Just the word ‘milkweed’ brought to mind this memory,so allow me a small digression, please. ..

When I was just a little kid, 6,7, 8 perhaps, we had lots of small things to do that helped with the “War Effort” (W W II). One was to take old pillowcases and walk the fields to pick the burst milkweed pods, and fill our sacks with the down/kapok.
It was used to make life vests… seems like it would just be heavy and soggy when wet, but both the word and this picture reminded me of this fall activity.

The wildflowers are a result of Carleton’s Arb Director, Nancy Braker, request to seed the areas disturbed around the Dudley(new)Bridge with native plant seed. Each year as it becomes more established we will be treated to nature’s beauty at it’s best. Thanks Nancy!

    Griff,

The Basilica of St Mary’s won the popular vote contest for the Partners in Preservation contest and automatically recieves its’ grant request of $100,000.The next step is for the Advisory Council, lead by the mayors of St Paul and Minneapolis,to decide how to distribute the rest of the money.
Liz and I have an report to file by Wednesday detailing all of our efforts to support the Waterford Iron Bridge campaign, which will factor heavily in the award decisions of the Advisory Council. The National Historic Trust representatives that visited the Open House were very supportive of our chances…and impressed by the community wide support of the Iron Bridge!
Liz will be contacted on Wednesday, November 9th with the results of the Advisory Council, so all we do now is wait for the call.
Thanks again everyone for your terrific support of the Waterford Iron Bridge!

Holy shit! Nfld Patch: Waterford Iron Bridge Awarded $95,000

Facing groups with more people behind it than call Northfield home, it was announced Thursday that the small group of volunteers trying to rehabilitate the Waterford Iron Bridge had been awarded $95,000 in its quest—the third highest amount given.

To say that Waterford Township is excited would be the understatement of the year! Being awarded this amount of money for our bridge is a result of ALL the effort and support we have received from everyone in the community. This is a ‘little guy wins big’ scenerio and we couldn’t be happier about it. So many people behind the scenes were involved in this project, and to all of you THANK YOU! As the repairs advance we will be sure to keep you posted.

It’s also cool that Waterford Bridge’s Dakota County ‘partner’ in the competition, Historic Pilot Knob in Mendota Heights, got “$75,000 to bury existing power lines that currently disrupt the natural landscape.” My ancestors are likely happy about this.

    Griff,

Liz and I would like to thank the following people for their outstanding support work on the Waterford Iron Bridge Project.
    * Hayes Scriven, Northfield Historical Society-he provided the initial launch of the Wateford Iron Bridge Facebook page.
    * Jenna Erickson, Ass’t Director of the Madeline Island School of the Arts-she managed the uploading of all the creative material on the Facebook page and provided much needed expertise in this area.
    * Chris Casper, Photographer-he shot the profile images we used for all of our promotional materials.
    * Paul Hager, Northfield Cable TV-his efforts with the video were recognized by the National Historic Trust and Advisory Council as being able to convey the heart and soul of the project.

And last but not least, Liz and I are grateful for the incredible support from all the individuals and groups who tirelessly promoted the story by every means at hand.

What a win for the Waterford Iron Bridge!
