Locally Grown is teaming up with ArtOrg for ArtProm, coming up Friday night, April 4th, Upstairs Rueb. I got this email from ArtOrg head honcho Dave Machacek:
We would like people to give us their favorite Prom songs. We will load up the iPod with everyone’s favorite Prom-theme songs, and use that for the music when The Todd Thompson Trio is taking a break.
See the poster and this ArtOrg blog post for more info on the event.
Soooo, what’s your favorite prom theme song?
One of my faves: Shout! by the Isley Brothers.
“A WHITE SPORTCOAT AND A PINK CARNATION, i’M ALL DRESSED UP FOR THE PROM.” I’m not sure who but maybe it was Marty Robbins.
Louie Louie…The Kingsmen. We didn’t know what the words were…but we knew they were dirty!
Or as a real homage to garage rock gone beserk…Surfin Bird…Minnesota’s own Trashmen sent the chaperones running for the doors.
Modern English – “Melt with You”

Could we hear from some women, too? And yes, Dan, it was Marty Robbins.
“Forever Young” by the German group Alphaville.
Stairway to Heaven!
Okay, I get a slow dance number, too: Unchained Melody by Bobby Hatfield, one of the Righteous Brothers.
Jeez, this is getting to be a geezer fest. How about some hits from 80s and 90s?
My first slow dance was to “Angel Eyes” by the Jeff Healey Band.
As time goes on,
I realize
Just what you mean
To me
And now,
Now that you’re near,
Promise your love
That I’ve waited to share
And dreams
Of our moments together
Color my world with hope of loving you
Ok, how fast can you all name the tune, who sang and what year it would have been that I went to Prom…
Okay, so you want something from the 70’s and 80’s and Ruth wants more women. This takes care of the timeline and the female equation. Donna Summer’s “Last Dance”. When I owned the ‘Rueb’ that was the song that got everybody out on the dance floor and under the disco ball. Timeline from 1977 to 1983
I don’t think senior high was the “best time of my life”… but I did have fun at several proms!?! When it comes to the music – there are so many to choose from (just guess what year I graduated from Farmington High?)…
When You Close Your Eyes, Night Ranger
Almost Paradise, Mike Reno & Ann Wilson
Hold Me Now, Thompson Twins
Time After Time, Cyndi Lauper
I Want To Know What Love Is, Foreigner
Careless Whisper, Wham!
Can’t Fight This Feeling, REO Speedwagon
The Search Is Over, Survivor
Tonight I Celebrate My Love, Peabo Bryson & Roberta Flack
Let Me Love You Tonight, Pure Prairie League
Every Woman In The World, Air Supply
For Your Eyes Only, Sheena Easton
Waiting For A Girl Like You, Foreigner
Open Arms, Journey
Every Breath You Take, Police
(She’s) Sexy + 17, Stray Cats
It was only a couple of years ago that I found out what this song was about, but at the time it was fun to dance to…
Little Red Corvette, Prince
Having to only choose one, the ArtProm song for me by April Wine:
Seulement entre toi et moi
Means that our love will always be
Just between you and me
Baby I know our love will be
Just between you,
Just between you and me
Blue Velvet, Bobby Vinton
It’s My Party, Lesley Gore
I Will Follow Him, Little Peggy March
Da Doo Ron Ron, Crystals
I think I just gave away my age!
Robbie
Thanks for the suggestions! I’m putting the playlist together for Art Prom from my collection and I’m happy to say that I’ve got most – if not all – of these requests and plenty of prom classics from the 80s and 90s, too. Trying to offer an equal opportunity prom here.
I don’t think this is “geezer” stuff. Many young people today are listening to classic rock’n’roll. Geezers are only those who *feel* old — and no one feels old on (Art) Prom night! Remember?
I’d share my sad, poignant story of senior prom – but let’s just say that my 25th high school reunion more than made up for it. 😉
Hope I am not toto late, with Sailing by Christopher Cross. I also love anything by Foreigner, Bob Dylan, or I love a R and B song called “Solid” by Ashford and Simpson. If you want to go way back, “Skylark” by Cleo Laine.
Jeff Beck, anything at all. Oh, Okay, I could go on for the rest of the year.
“Hot for Teacher” by Van Halen?
I also like “Solid” by Ashford and Simpson! They run a restaurant in NYC now called “Sugar Bar”–where you can order “Asford and Simpson Paella”.
According to my yearbook, my class’s prom theme song was “Up Where We Belong,” which reminds me of why I did not attend my HS prom.
The really scary part is that it would’ve been performed by the covers band “Pegasus II,” a band notable only for the fact that one of the Physics teachers played keyboards.
Again, thanks for the suggestions. You’re welcome to post your favorite — but I can’t make any guarantees at this time that they’ll be on the playlist tonight. But I can say that there will be lots of familiar Prom songs from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. We hope you’ll enjoy the mix!
I missed the fun but Dave M. has Art Prom photos posted in his Flickr gallery. Anyone else have photos posted?
I took Prom pic’s plus some random pic’s – they can be found at:
