A LG sandbox: Experiment with HTML formatting in comments

sandbox Interested in using more formatting in your comments?

Here’s a blog post where you can practice attaching comments and not have to worry about disrupting the conversation.

I think the three handiest uses of HTML formatting in comments are:

If you use FireFox for your web browser (and you should), there’s a very handy add-on that does all of the above and more called Xinha, a “portable WYSIWYG editor.”

Feel free to ask questions here, too.

Okay, Griff.  I’m using the space you’ve kindly provided to test Xinha Here!

    Is this a bullet point?
Is this a second bullet point?

    Cool!!

Nope, the bullet points didn’t work. I wonder how come? The link feature worked, though. At least that’s easier than always writing out <a href=”…., etc.

    Griff,

I have twice tried to post a comment with HTML links in it (first in the Housing thread, and then here). In both cases, it has not appeared. However, attempts to repost have resulted in a “you already said that!” message.

… And it has again failed to appear. I’ll email you the post (which is, again, for the “Good Investments for Successful Housing,” aka “The New Slums,” thread.

Or rather, I won’t. Lost my “copy.”

Could there perhaps be a setting issue? I’ve also encountered the problems Rob and Patrick stated above.

After you compose your comment in Xinga and click OK, the HTML code should appear in the comment text box, and from there, you click the Say It button to attach the comment.

You’re saying the HTML is discarded and only plain text gets posted?

  8. Patrick Enders said:

No, my problem was more fundamental. If there was an unembedded HTML address in my post, the entire post would not appear.

We’ll see if it’s better in my next post…

Well, it worked that time, but it didn’t earlier. Either in this thread, or in the Housing thread.

…but it still won’t let me post the Strib address I wanted to post earlier. I’ll try again.

…maybe if I break up the address, it’ll let me post it in pieces?

    Oh look, that worked!

…but I can’t post any comment which includes that HTML address in its uninterrupted entirety.

    Griff, your sandbox is odd.

Griff (#7): That’s exactly what I did, but:

the bullet points didn’t work; on the other hand

    the link did work. Therefore,
    it’s not my fault.

We’ll see what happens this time.

Once again, link but no bullet points.

    Griff (#7)-

Here are my steps for this message:

    Writing this in Xinha
Clicking ok, and then seeing the html-coded version in the LGN textbox
Copying and pasting into an email, which I’ll send you so you can compare.

It’s odd, because this used to work quite easily (around about Dec/January, if I remember correctly)

    Any thoughts?

Sean, I’m wondering if certain HTML is allowed by those with WP admin privs like you and me but not by commenters.

    April 24, 2008
  19. Griff, I made both those comments when I was not signed into WordPress. The change has happened on the server.

So everyone, all new lists should work, though the change is not retroactive.

I’ve just lost two messages into the ether:

    • one included an embedded url
    • the other included just an http reference without the embed

Both disappeared.  Sad.  BUT do these bullets work?
