La Vencedora moves to the Q-Block

La Vencedora is a Mexican grocery, deli, and restaurant that has moved from Riverview Drive and reopened in the old Maria’s building in the Q Block at Hwy 3 and 2nd.

I stopped by briefly yesterday and an employee said the new owner is Cecilio Palacios. A search shows that he’s the publisher/editor of La Edición De Minnesota, a bilingual newspaper published in Faribault.

Griff, is that just the breakfast menu? I could go for a good traditional taco.

Our family lives in the northwest part of town, and we’ll appreciate having a bakery and grocery store that we can reach without having to cross Highway 3 or Highway 19.

If anyone gets there before I do, can they please take note of the hours and post them here as a public service?

Thanks! (I will be stopping by tomorrow!)

I think we should have a witch doctor come and remove the curse on this building. I’d love to see a business or restaurant stay in there for more than 2 years.

I dont remember what it was originally, but I do recall it being:
-BBQ restaurant (good food, but it didn’t last long)
-Quizno’s (had to compete with the rest of the sub shops in town)
-the noodle place (can’t remember the name, but I believe it was the same -owner that use to own the old Ranch House)
-Maria’s (pretty good food, for a decent price)
-now La Vencedora (hopefully will stay for a long time!)

And probably several other things before and in between that I’m either forgetting, never even knew existed, or blocked out of my mind completely, from some traumatic experience.

Griff- If your really serious about breaking some “curse” on this property, I know some people who are serious about seeing that accomplished. You can let me know on my personal e-mail.

We stopped in this morning. It was quite chaotic, and there was a lot of merchandise still being stocked. Not all of the sign panels on the back wall were up, and things were being moved around.

However, there was a fine selection of baked goods, some meat and sausages, and several rows of grocery.

We were a bit late for breakfast, and a bit to early for lunch, so we decided that we would stop by in the evening later this week and pick up a few things.

We wish La Vencedora good luck. It looks like it will be a great addition to Northfield.

I should have stated this better. The shelves were stocked with product, but it appeared that we arrived in the middle of a delivery, as there was boxes everywhere, and things being put away. It was difficult to navigate when we arrived, so we decided to stop back later.

There were about 10 people in the store at about 10:45 on Saturday. 😎

I think it is interesting that the name, La Vencedora, means “the victory”. Perhaps this is the establishment that will break the past pattern of closed businesses. That is my prayer. And, I intend to put feet to my prayers and give them business.

My daughter and I stopped in this afternoon. This is not a bakery so much as it is a Mexican grocery store. I use the term Mexican to describe the nationality culture as opposed to Hispanic, which can cover several Spanish speaking Central American countries. There are baked goods, but I can’t tell if they are made there or off-site. Mexican pasteries are pretty bland but good, more shortening/flour/not-to-sweet confections compared to what you might find at Quality Bakery. The lady tending the store was very nice, and my daughter’s profeciency in Spanish was a great help. I wish them well.

  11. I am glad that La Vencedora Market is up and running again. It is not new, however, as it was in the strip mall where Brick Oven Bakery is. They just recently moved to this new location. Good luck La Vencedora Market! We will miss you.

  12. I’ve shopped at La Vencedora a few times now, and they’re gradually increasing their range of products. My wife (Anne Larson) stopped there today while walking back from downtown and picked up a few items for tonight’s Mexican dinner: a couple of large, tasty avocadoes, a big bunch of cilantro, and four limes for a total of $4.34. Not bad!

She reports that they have a pretty good produce selection, a fairly wide selection of fresh meats and delicious-looking baked goods, canned goods, burritos/tacos/tamales/fresh salsas/guacamoles, juices, etc. and assorted dried goods. They do have some seating for dining on-location, too.

Maybe these folks will break the dreaded curse!

The people at the store are very gracious. Recently, I had a friend from Ecuador come to Mayo Clinic with her son for some serious heart surgery. I was looking for some things to ease their homesickness. I found some juice and snacks that were familiar to them and a Spanish language newspaper, and the folks guided me to River City Books, where I found a novel for the son and a collection of short stories for my friend. They were thrilled.
