Ice cream truck, Cool Treats, making the rounds

While out for a walk near Tyler Park tonight, Robbie and I flagged down a passing ice cream truck called Cool Treats.

Dundas resident Betty Olson (left in left center photo) and her husband Larry Olson purchased the truck recently and are serving up “hard or soft-serve cones, novelties and much more!” to kids of all ages in Northfield and the surrounding area. Call Betty at 645-1646.

Awesome! We found her in the parking lot outside of the Key. I’ll bet she wasn’t expecting to be mobbed by a bunch of teenagers!
I got a hot fudge sundae which was very very very delicious.

Betty is featured on the front page of today’s St. Paul Pioneer Press… big photo, too: Pricier streets for frozen treats

For Betty Olson, 58, of Dundas, Minn., rising gas prices have reinforced her strategy of seeking out events where she can park and sell ice cream from her Cool Treats truck rather than drive it around a neighborhood.

Olson and her husband, Larry, purchased their truck in February and operate exclusively in Northfield. The truck is a retrofitted Ford van that costs about $86 to fill up. Olson also spends about $10 a day on regular unleaded for an on-board generator that keeps her soft-serve machine and other equipment humming.

“During the Fourth of July, we stumbled on a family reunion, and the people were so excited to buy from us — they said that we helped make their day,” Olson said. “I gave out my cards, because that’s the type of thing that we’re trying to build.”
