“Supporting Local Businesses and the Conservation of Gasoline”

And more news on the biking/sustainability front: 2006 ArTech graduate Colin Colby, inspired by an idea he observed while in college in Sante Fe, has started “Green Hermes”, a bicycle delivery/courier service for Northfield. His tagline is, “Supporting Local Businesses and the Conservation of Gasoline”. Sometimes the best ideas are the simplest.

Northfield has a lot of “lone eagle” entrepreneurs, and I’m always interested in learning more about them. I especially like the idea of supporting home-grown entrepreneurs like Colin, so I hope this business idea takes off.

I know some of you avid cyclists out there will be checking out the rig. A former employee of Mike’s Bikes, Colin and his former boss Mike Moyer put together this custom job specifically for the purpose. Those are some seriously fat tires.

Green Hermes has posted flyers at Blue Monday, EconoFoods, and other places around town listing his services and contact info. Rates range from $5-9 depending upon the size/weight of the delivery. Colin can be contacted by email or, for faster response, by phone (952-250-0320).

Best of all, Colin is both red-headed AND left-handed, a truly winning combination.

You have to partner up with one of the local pizza eateries. Best of luck.

In NYC, it was always the norm to get Chineese food delivery on a bike.

    This is very cool.

Maybe you could speak with Just Food, and do grocery delivery?

    Good luck!

  4. This is a great idea! My wife and I, living beyond Prairie on the east side of town, have talked about how great it would be to have a delivery service for the little stuff that runs out each day. We might be giving you a call!

Congrats Colin!! PEDAL POWER RULES!!!! Since I believe I am the only other pedal powered business in town ( Sweet Pea’s Ice Cream Trike), How about a friendly race down division during crazy days. We could race down division with stops along the way to serve customers.

Thank you all very much for your support. Chinese food and pizza delivery are easy things for me to say very excitedly that they can be easily done! I have planned and set up Green Hermes as a deliverer for your needs and desires and as a customer of any business from whom you wish me to purchase and deliver. So, fear not Nick, take-out (and pizza) can be easily ordered and delivered through me (bringing us a few pedals closer to the Big Apple than most people may suppose, John).
As for the grocery stores in town, Econo Foods and Just Food, they have been spoken to by me and have given the O.K. for me to shop and deliver their goods.
One of the goals of starting up this business was to bring convenience with a world friendly approach to all of Northfield; I hope I can do that for you, Christopher, and whoever else is in a similar situation.

And in regard to racing you, Jerry… the date is set.

    Thanks again for the support!
    Colin
