Dog park gets some new amenities; online information lacking

Northfield dog park I’m not sure when it happened, since I don’t own a dog. But two benches and a shelter have been added to the dog park in Babcock Park. Nice!

Meanwhile, there doesn’t seem to be an easy way to find any information about the dog park. On the City of Northfield’s web site, a search for ‘dog park’ brings up several PDFs, all of them generating ‘page not found’ errors. A Google search on "dog park" northfield brings up the Canines at Play website but it appears that the site’s not been updated since 2007.

My dog Bridgette and I are fairly regular patrons of the dog park. I believe the “shelter” is left over from when during JJ Days, when the area was used to “store” rodeo horses. The shed was where hay was stored. The benches have been there as long as I’ve been visiting the park. In the summer, I think there may be a picnic table or two, too.

Someone faithfully replenishes the clever plastic bag containers and occasionally, when the entrance area is muddy, some kind soul spreads mulch. There is a nice glass fronted kiosk which has a lot of rather obsolete info. Beats me who has access to it.

For those of us who have dogs who aren’t always dependable off leash, this is a very much appreciated amenity. My sense is that it gets regular use.

The Northfield dog park is functional and easily accessible, but the Dundas Park is so wonderfully grassy and quiet. Such a pleasant contrast.

The benches have been there from the beginning in 2007, and there are usually a couple of picnic tables there too, for the smaller dogs to hide under if needed.

The shelter was built by a Northfield boyscout, as part of his Eagle Badge I believe. It sure is nice to have on windy days!!! IF I knew his name I would thank him personally.

And patrons DO help by bringing plastic bags to keep the containers filled, and also supply water for the water bowls in the summer months. I’m not sure who provides the mulch when it is muddy, but it is sure a nice thing to do!!

As for the message kiosk, Dr. Rich Lorang has the key to that I believe.

THANKS to all who help to keep the dog park clean and safe!!

    John,
I totally agree with you, the Dundas Park is far superior to NF’s. NF’s dog park is a joke, its a muddy mess and it is in wrong location. I encourage anyone that visits NF’s park to check out Dundas, you will be impressed. Kudos to the city of Dundas.
