We got this email today from Kelly Irvine at Carlson Capital Management. I’ve added some links.

Dear friends at Locally Grown – The 8th annual Northfield Jingle Bell Run/Walk was held on Saturday the 12th and was a great success.  We had a super turn out and early numbers indicate that as a community we raised around $3,500 for the HealthFinders Collaborative.  The 2009 planning committee sincerely thanks everyone who came out to run, walk or volunteer!

Andrea and Theo crank it up for Way Park on Saturday

Andrea Een Andrea Een was in promo mode yesterday at GBM, letting everyone know about the Way Park benefit concert on Saturday at First United Church of Christ. She and Theo Wee will be performing the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. The event also is a tribute to Wee who’s now in her 40th year as organist at First UCC.

See Jane McWilliams’ blog post on Northfield.org for all the details.

Photo albums: The 2009 Susan Perry Memorial Walk for Animals (Bridgette Hallcock photos)

I was out of town at a funeral on Saturday so I missed taking photos for the Susan Perry Memorial Walk for Animals. Fortunately, Castle Rock-based photographer Bridgette Hallcock was on hand to chronicle the event.  I’ve put her photos into two albums in my Northfield gallery, appending Bridgette’s name to the albums (Picasaweb doesn’t allow galleries to have multiple authors).

I stopped by Cannon Valley Veterinary Clinic’s retail store yesterday to get a photo of staffer Leah Erickson holding up a poster and t-shirt for next Saturday’s Susan Perry Memorial Walk for Animals (PDF poster), a benefit for the Rice County Humane Society (RCHS). The clinic is an event co-sponsor.

(See previous LG blog posts on Susan Perry for background info on her. See the Northfield.org calendar listing for the event for more event details.)

fg_pageRCHS has a link to a fundraising page at FirstGiving where you can either

  • donate directly; or
  • set up your own fundraising page and then ask friends and family to donate via your page.

RCHS reminds everyone that they receive "… no tax dollars or United Way funds, and rely on donations from animal lovers like you to help us help animals."

Red Cross mishandles a blood donation appointment

Red Cross logoOn Tuesday, Aug 11, I had a double red cell donation appointment at 1pm at the Northfield Ballroom. When I arrived, donors were told that some supplies had not yet arrived from St. Paul and that it would be a 45 minute delay. I had other things scheduled so I departed, irritated because they have my phone number and could have alerted me. But I’m more irritated now that no one has contacted me in the month since it happened.(continued)

A Soldier’s March for Peace ends today; Gunnar returns for Townie Night

Gunnar SwansonA Soldier's March for Peace window display The other graphic on the First National Bank Northfield’s window is the Soldier’s March for Peace, part of the War Kids Relief project.

I phoned Gunnar Swanson this morning and yes, he’s in Faribault this morning and is finishing his 1000-mile Soldier’s March for Peace walk from Texas to Minnesota today. His ASM4P blog tells the whole story of his walk, but here are the details of his arrival today for DJJD Townie Night and the weekend:

9/10, Thursday – Northfield:  5pm Gunnar will meet Northfield high school students in parking lot of NF HS and walk the last mile with him to Bridge Square in center of Northfield for Townie Night.  Northfield always throws this and there will be food and fun stuff to do.  Very family oriented. Actually EVERYONE is invited to participate in this…not just highschoolers. Looks like the DJJD royalty and the James Gang will be coming too! :) There will be a reception in Bridge Square at 6:00pm.

9/11, Friday – Cannon Falls:  8am Gunnar and Dina will be at Cannon Falls Elementary to meet with all the students This will be amazing…don’t miss it! The entire Cannon Falls student body (pre-school through 12th graders) will gather to hear Gunnar’s and my final presentation (the one we have give to YMCA kids over the past 10 weeks) and then write letters for kids in Iraq and Afghanistan. They will also make a human tunnel from the elementary school to the high school for Gunnar to walk through..all wearing red, white and blue and holding flags. How cute!     KARE-11 is coming to do a story on this as well.

9/12, Saturday – Northfield:  4:30pm Gunnar will give "the" speech near Bridge Square where the big bank robbery showdown was and will be presented with a check from VFW. Yes, this will be before the 5:00 bank raid reinactment. The VFW and American Legion Honor Guard will be holding the flags to honor Gunnar as he makes a short speech and thanks all who supported/donated. Also, the VFW will be making a donation at that time, and any other local businesses who want to make a public donation can do it then as well.

Podcast: after a 3-week hiatus, The Triumvirate is back

Julie Bixby and grandson LukeWe got back in KYMN’s studio this week (new air-time 6:00 PM Mondays) and covered a bunch of local issues after a brief visit from Julie Bixby who talked about her recent participation in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure (breast cancer) in the Twin Cities. I neglected to get a photo of Julie so I stole one of her with her grandson Luke from the Cow’s website.

All hail the Rock ‘n Roll Revival triumvirate

Bonnie McKown, Tom McKown, and Gayle Collins

Bonnie McKown, Tom McKown, and Gayle Collins (click to enlarge)

There’s another triumvirate in town. Tom McKown (English teacher and Rock ‘N Roll Revival director), Bonnie McKown, and Gayle Collins (High School Media Specialist, now retired) are the big three behind the bi-annual event.

Bonnie and Gayle volunteer their time (Bonnie even takes vacation days during performance week from her job as a pediatric nurse), while Tom gets a small stipend that likely pays him the equivalent of 30 cents/hour.

high-fivefist_jabWhile there are many dozens of volunteers who help make Rock ‘n Roll Revival happen, these three deserve a special high-five and a fist jab whenever you see them.

Rock ‘N Roll Revival volunteers honored; a blogger discovered

5th Bridge Executive Director Candy Taylor and her husband Cliff created this volunteer thank-you display in the lobby of the Northfield Middle School, honoring this year’s Rock ‘N Roll Revival volunteers. It reads:

Rock ‘N Roll Revival volunteers display5th Bridge salutes the hundreds of people who have made this production possible… directors, choreographers, set designers, set builders, hair dressers, costume sewers, costume helpers, program designers, local business sponsors, concession volunteers, ushers, ticket agents, sound and lighting crew members, band members, cast members, refreshment volunteers, parent and community volunteers, and many, many more! Amazing things happen when people share their gifts and talents. Visit www.5thbridge.org to learn about local service opportunities.

Margaret Colangelo and John Colangelo, I met two of the volunteers last night: Margaret Colangelo and John Colangelo, who were staffing the concessions table. Margaret works at Carleton and in her copious amount of free time, maintains two blogs: 1) Happy to be from Iowa even though I live in Minnesota; and 2) Endurance Diva – thrive while you survive. John has his own construction services company, Foggia Incorporated.

Mentoring news and notes

Mentoring banner at library

HCI’s Zach Pruitt has a blog post about the new Northfield Youth Micro-Grant Program being run by the Union of Youth. Five new business plans are being developed.

In a recent issue of the Northfield News, Jenna Herzog of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Minnesota has a commentary titled Mentoring benefits the Big as much as the Little.

The Northfield Public Library is a recruitment center for the Northfield Mentoring Coalition. I blogged about my becoming a mentor last fall for Connected Kids program. I continue to be impressed at how well it’s run.

Deal or no deal? An intern story

bonniecoverpage2The last week in January, I interviewed three professionals who are trading their know-how for the ingenuity (and, to a certain extent, free labor) of interns from Northfield’s two colleges. One partnership has already led to an art project, transforming discarded steel breadboxes into women’s breastplate armor. And there is promise that another trade could result in two new Web sites that could help boost the careers of local ceramic artists and rock stars.

5th Bridge’s photo album from last week’s ‘Feed My Starving Children’ mobile packing event

From 5th Bridge’s ‘Feed My Starving Children’ page:

The Northfield mobile packing event for Feed My Starving Children, which was hosted by 5th Bridge, this past weekend, was a fabulous success. 171,072 nutritious, life saving meals, were packed by 705 Northfield volunteers and over $26,000 was donated by individuals and businesses to cover the costs of the food we packed. Simply put, 468 starving children around the world will be fed for the next year, because of the caring and generosity of Northfield residents.
