Photo album: Girls Nite Out

After drinking a little too much wine on the Contented Cow‘s outdoor patio earlier this evening, I wandered around the shops downtown a bit with my sweetie, taking photos of Girls Nite Out while, um walking it off.

Who are the parents of the kids in this model railroad train display photo?

Adrienne Falcon, Director of Academic Civic Engagement (ACE) at Carleton College, sent me a large print (left) of one of my photos that was part of the Frames of Engagement exhibition at the Weitz Center for Creativity open house last fall (blogged here).

I’d like to give the print to the one of the families whose kids appear in the photo.

Photo album: St. Patrick’s Day parade

Kevin O'Connell, Jim Bohnhoff St. Patrick's Day parade, downtown Northfield Jim Pokorney
Yesterday’s St. Patrick’s Day parade began on downtown’s west side and wound its way over the pedestrian foot bridge, along Riverwalk to Bridge Square, and then back to the Contented Cow‘s outdoor stage area.

The holy trinity of Kevin O’Connell, Jim Bohnhoff, and Jim Pokorney, after many weeks minutes of planning, once again pulled off this great contribution to Northfield’s legacy of community events.

By keeping the parade entirely on pedestrian walkways instead of having it on Division St. as in years past, no street barricades or police were needed. Therefore, organizers were evidently able to avoid having to file an application 45 days ahead of time and pay the $20 fee required by Northfield’s Community Event Policy.

I thought it was better, actually, as the parade participants and the observing crowd were in closer proximity to one another.  People also lingered much longer afterwards on the Riverwalk and around the Cow’s outdoor stage where live music made the gathering all the more festive. Of course, 80-degree weather helped, too.

Robbie and I both took photos. See our large slideshow of 55 photos (recommended) or SLOW CLICK this small slideshow:

The Last Known Whereabouts held a reunion show at the Contented Cow last Saturday. The former Northfielders (2 Carls, 2 Oles) went their separate ways in 2009 after forming the bluegrass band in 2003.

I happened to sit next to Stewart and Marylyn Stroup, the parents of Jake Stroup (Vocals & Mandolin) who came from Madison WI to watch the show. I twisted Jacob’s arm during a break to pose for a photo with his parents.

Here’s a 3-min video clip from their riveting show:

Photo redux: blizzard, Dec. 11, 2010

While digging through my photo archives to create the new winter-oriented photo banners now at the top of Logro, I browsed through my photo album of the blizzard one year ago today, which I blogged about here.

We received about a foot and half of snow that weekend.  I remember thinking as I was about to cross the open field in the Upper Arb in near-whiteout conditions, Should I do this?  It would be more than a little ironic if I ended up like my grandfather. (He froze to death during the Armistice Day Blizzard of 1940.) I decided that near-whiteout wasn’t the same as complete-whiteout.  I loved it.

I wasn’t aware that there was an eclipse of the moon this morning until I saw it from I-35 at about 7 am on my way to Lebanon Hills for some mountain biking. Fortunately, two other Northfielders were prepared.

Eric Johnson took the above photos from downtown Northfield. He wrote:

Every five minutes I would meander out of GBMonday, take a photo and return for more warm coffee.  This shot was taken from the west side of the Neuger Communications parking lot using a plastic garbage container to steady the camera.  Panasonic FZ40 at 24X optical.

Northfield.org’s Rob Hardy took two photos "from near the Northfield water tower on Spring Creek Road."

Downtown Northfield is looking festive this morning with the 4+ inches of snow yesterday, just in time for the 13th Annual Winter Walk (PDF schedule) coming up on Thursday eve. I took these photos just before 6 am.

Slideshow and video of photos used to make the 2011 fall photo banners

I’ve put up four new fall photo banners at the top of LoGro: two are downtown-related (one exception), one is colleges-related, one is all-Waterford Bridge.

See the album of photos that I used to make the banners (large slideshow), or watch this high-def, one-minute video of the photos with music (Nocturne No. 2 In E Flat Major by Chopin). You can click the full-screen icon anytime while the video is playing:

If your bandwidth isn’t sufficient for the high-def version of the video, you can watch a standard version here.

Fall photo banners coming Real Soon Now

Now that this year’s brilliant fall colors are pretty much gone, I’ve started work on some new fall-themed photo banners to replace the summer-themed ones that rotate at the top of the LoGro’s web pages.

But I’m not done.  Here’s a preview of two from Bridge Square:

Photo albums: ArtOrg’s opening of the Glen Hanson Gallery

Last Sunday, Robbie and I attended the opening of the ArtOrg exhibit Glen Hanson Gallery: Now and Then, held at ArtOrg’s HQ on the grounds of Switzer’s Nursery and Landscaping just north of Castle Rock on Hwy 3.

ArtOrg’s Dave Machacek has a Flickr album/set of the opening, with all photos by Dan Iverson.

Knowing that Dan Iverson was taking lots of attendee photos freed me up to take other kinds of photos, like ones of Glenn Switzer prepping the roasted hog, as well as a few artsy fartsy shots:

Not much in the way of fall colors in the above photos I took this morning adjacent to Carleton College’s Lyman Lakes but the monarch butterfly and the bees took priority.

A little more color in the photos below. I’ll try again later this week.

It seems like our fall colors came on fast last week.  I took these photos yesterday morning on the St. Olaf campus along Hwy 19 where some of the trees are have red vines wrapping their trunks and hanging like garlands from their branches.

I hope to get out again this week for more.  Know of other fall color photos of areas around Northfield?

Nick Sinclair and colleagues hosted Lowbrow-High Octane VI in downtown Northfield on Saturday. Division St. between 4th and 2nd was packed with people and appeared to not have enough room for all the vehicles that showed up.

The event included the Lowbrow art show at the NAG, the Rat Rod Magazine booth, music on the outdoor stage at the Contented Cow, and the evening party scene along the Riverwalk.

Lowbrow High-Octane 2011 sponsors and organizations

Nick also pulled together an impressive list of sponsors and collaborating organizations. This event continues to grow each year (this was #6) and has the potential to take over the entire downtown for a three-day weekend.
