It was just me and Ross this week, talking about all-things Northfield including goose poop, the upcoming council and school board elections (separate issues), and the opportunities afforded by the departure of Northfield City Administrator Joel Walinski.
It’s clear from listening to the show, however, that we need Tracy.

It was just us this week and we spent our entire non-fluff segment talking about downtown parking, as it’s at the top of Streetscape Taskforce’s list of recommendations (PDF of June packet).
$760,000 is budgeted for expenses related to the purchase of this rental property at 304 Washington St.
Update 10:30 PM:
I took these two screenshots from Google Maps view of the street, adding an arrow on one that points to the property.

We split our time between A) making suggestions for cutting the budget at City Hall and B) discussing Mayor Mary Rossing’s 5-minute commentary at the start of last week’s Council meeting.

KYMN has the indexed video of the 5/18/10 Council meeting so you can go right to the video of the Mayor’s Opening Remarks. (KYMN News Director Scott Peterson mentioned her remarks in his news update on 5/19.)
There are a couple minutes of dead air at the beginning, plus the approval of minutes etc. so her opening remarks don’t begin till the 3:45 minute mark. If you’re in a hurry, here’s an audio excerpt. (Click play to listen. 5 minutes.)

It’s never pretty when Ross bails on our radio show/podcast and yesterday was no exception.
Tracy put on her Chair of the Northfield Planning Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals (PCZBA) hat and after exchanging pleasantries about sidewalk dining, we went toe-to-toe on the planning process for the business park(s). She played the ‘nice’ card and then ended with a lecture till we ran out of time. I was unhappy. I’m mostly over it.

Our guest this week, Northfield City Councilor Kris Vohs (At-Large), with two of his grandkids in the audience.
We asked him to explain his vote in favor of the plan to reuse the existing Safety Center location for a new fire station and to build a police station at a new location. The surprising short version of his answer: getting ‘political’ support to build a single building would be difficult in this economic climate. More surprising: he doesn’t support going to the citizens on a referendum to fund the facilities.
The rest of the show we spent discussing the trees on 4th St. which again comes before the Council tonight.

Northfield Ward 1 City Councilor Jim Pokorney was our guest this week, talking about A) the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day parade on March 13; and B) what else, City Council communications.
I neglected to take a photo of him so I’ve recycled one from a previous podcast, plus another of him in his St. Patrick’s Day hat and electric sweater.

On our last podcast of 2009, we tried to decipher the Nfld News column by City of Northfield At-Large Councilor Rhonda Pownell titled Teamwork: Time to let go of fear, unforgiveness. So this week, she came on our show to explain it herself. From there, we broadened the discussion to include overall City Council performance for 2009 and anticipated new goals for 2010.

Bob Will was our guest this week, talking with us about efforts to save the Northfield train depot. You might think Bob is an old geezer, given that he has a few ‘formers’ associated with his name (eg, former Carleton economics professor, former Northfield Rotary Club president). My sweetie happened to walk by the KYMN studio window as we started recording this week’s show. Tracy waved her in and before I knew it, instead of discussing the politics of Northfield, we were discussing the politics of household chores, triggered by last week’s blog post on Deciphering the paradox of declining female happiness. This toilet-related Argyle Sweater cartoon by Scott Hilburn featured prominently in our discussion. Where were you when I needed you, Ross? Click play to listen. 30 minutes.
