Bly and Dahle placed in Sesquicentennial Time Capsule

A reception was held at the State Capitol yesterday afternoon to close out the Sesquicentennial and thank everyone involved. (I blogged a photo album of the event here.) The program included the official sealing of the Sesquicentennial Time Capsule.
Our legislators, Sen. Kevin Dahle and Rep. David Bly, signed a Sesqui banner (I missed the deed) [...]

New Northfield Mayor Mary Rossing talks about her first day

I surprised Mayor Mary Rossing in her store Present Perfect this morning with my video camera. I mostly asked her questions that had to do with Monday night’s City Council meeting, which you can read a bit about here. We touched upon her changes in meeting procedure, her tactics on facilitating meetings and her outlook [...]

Holiday greetings from Morgan and Cameron

Just like last year, we got a holiday greeting card from Morgan Weiland and Cameron Nordholm that included their photo.
Who are they? We have this blurb on our About page:
We’re indebted to former KRLX news director Morgan Weiland and former KRLX station manager Cameron Nordholm for their help in launching the show in early [...]

Former Northfielder Jeff Holte returns for a visit

I had coffee last week at the Goodbye Blue Monday with Jeff Holte, a former Northfielder and a colleague who I worked closely with back in the 80s.
In the summer of 1986, Jeff and I were hired by an education division of McGraw-Hill (based in Eden Prairie) to help launch MIX, the McGraw-Hill Information [...]

Missing Northfield

The longer I am away from Northfield the more I miss it.  Somehow I have a hunch it won’t be quite so pristine as in memories when I return.  Still, as far as small southeastern Minnesota towns go, it’s a good one, and I can’t wait to see it again in two weeks.

Ask Travis Peterson

I visited Travis Roy “Roarke” Peterson, 19, of Northfield, in the Rice County jail at 8 a.m. on Thursday.

Peterson is facing one first-degree charge of selling heroin, two second-degree charges of selling and one count of possessing heroin.

His bail is set at $100,000 and he has been in jail since the last week [...]

Former Northfield City Administrator Susan Hoyt departs ‘contentious’ Lake Elmo

Thanks to a sharp-eyed reader for alerting me to this Dec 2 Stillwater Gazette story: Things get ugly in Lake Elmo; shouting match prematurely ends Monday night’s city council meeting
For the second time is as many meetings, it took a motion to adjourn to break up a shouting match between Lake Elmo City Council [...]

No, It’s Not a Coup

Last night, planning commissioners Alice Thomas, Suzie Nakasian, and I hosted a “get-to-know-you” party for our newly elected female councillors and the Mayor-elect.
Before I issued the invites, I checked with City Attorney Maren Swanson to determine if Alice, Suzie, and I could be at the same place and even [gasp] potentially discuss items [...]

Northfield’s Sequin brothers: to Tierra Del Fuego on motorcycles "Until our Luck or Money Runs Out"

Northfielders Joe Seguin and Charles Sequin departed Colorado in early September and are on their way to the southern tip of South America (Tierra Del Fuego) on motorcycles, a 1990 Suzuki DR 650 and a 1990 Kawasaki KLR 250.
They’re chronicling their saga in this ADV Rider message forum thread, complete with dozens of photos.

Friend of alleged dealer offers perspective

Last week, I spoke to a friend of one of Northfield’s alleged heroin dealers. Since she is 15 years old and talking about a sensitive matter, I decided to keep her name and the name of her friend anonymous, even though she gave me permission to use her name.

Click play to listen. 1 minute, [...]

Halloween enthusiasts spare no expense for neighbors

At least two Northfielders spent hundreds of dollars and countless hours to build front-yard attractions for neighborhood children on Halloween night
Dana Goss of Lupine Drive was one and Joshua Godfredson of Buchanan Court wan another.
Norman Butler, owner of the Contented Cow, alerted me to Goss’ attraction and Jerry Weber and Nicole Maloney of Sweet Pea’s [...]

Belated birthday bash photo album: Joe Grundhoefer’s 50th

I just got the March photos from Joe Grundhoefer’s 50th birthday party posted to the Rueb ‘n’ Stein’s blog.  I didn’t take the photos or attend the bash but I thought I’d post them here since it appears to have been quite the community event.
Happy belated 50th, Joe!
