Anyone know what’s going on with the external construction/repairs at the Northfield Middle School? I took these photos earlier this week while biking the great bike/walking paths around the school.

I ran into Erica Zweifel and Catherine McBride last week as they emerged from a lunch-time celebration. As board members, they’d gotten word that the Cannon River STEM School’s (CRSS) application for charter status had been approved by the MN Department of Education. The Audubon Center of the North Woods is the sponsor. See [...]
I’m voting for Barack Obama but I disagree with his opposition to school vouchers for low-income families. (I don’t blame Obama for playing it safe on education or moving to the center on other issues for the general election. The guy wants to win.) In his recent speech to the AFT, he said (prepared remarks):
Now, [...]
While visiting the bathroom at the Northfield Public Library last week, I noticed literacy signs and stickers scattered about.
Left: the use of car stickers with engaging signsCenter: urinal target practice. Hit that Early Literacy Spot!Right: bladder control tactics. Red=stop. Green=go. Yellow=wait.
We celebrated the 100th podcast episode of Locally Grown today with a cookie and a candle (okay, a match) and then later, ceremoniously crumbled it over a beer. Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Freakin’-Dah, eh?
We then launched into a discussion about who’s running and who ain’t for City Council, Mayor, School Board, and County Board.

Northfield’s civic blogosphere got a boost in the summer of 2004 when a group of government leaders from the U.K. visited Northfield. (We hosted them at the Contented Cow, naturally. They were starved for British beer and bangers and mash.)
It encouraged more local citizens and leaders to try blogging, including those running for local [...]

In last week’s Nfld News, reporter Jeff Wold has this story: Playing for cancer: Students face faculty in a benefit for John Bade.
Bade, who turns 48 this month, is a teacher at Northfield Middle School. He was recently nominated as one of 10 finalists in Minnesota for the Teacher of the Year Award. Back on [...]
Northfield High School has a special website for prom this year (coming up on Saturday), and it includes all the details on the Grand March and after-prom party at Jesse James Lanes.
The front window at Econofoods has a “Have a Safe Prom” message, painted by a member of the Mayor’s Task [...]
Northfield students cleaned up at the National Learn and Serve America ceremony at the Minneapolis Convention Center last night. I’m not talking about litter either, local kids picked up a majority of the awards.
At the national conference on Service Learning, the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation handed out The President’s (that’s George W. [...]
In last week’s Strib: Forest Lake school closes doors to vets, so students go to them.
The National Heroes Tour, featuring decorated troops from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan talking about their military experiences, was supposed to address about 150 social studies students at the high school… The event, according to an announcement posted [...]
I saw this article in Sunday’s NY Times: Growing Cheers for the Home-Schooled Team - Home-school basketball players are now tracked by scouts, and some have accepted scholarships to leading colleges.
It made me wonder what the state of affairs is here in Northfield and surrounding areas when it comes to K-12 homeschooling and [...]
