It’s That Time of Year Again: Bike Fever

I know that there are die-hards like Bill Ostrem and Bruce Anderson, not to mention my husband, who bike almost all through the winter. But for the rest of us mere mortals, it generally isn’t until the roads dry up that we start thinking seriously about it.
Now spring is here, and I’m starting to [...]

Podcast: Northfield Garden Club, America in Bloom

Our guest this week: Judy Code, president of the Northfield Garden Club.
Never underestimate the power of a handful of gardeners determined to make their corner of the world a better place. The Northfield Garden Club has built an impressive number of coalitions, partnering with public and private organizations all over town.
The NDDC devoted their [...]

Councilors, Commissioners, Mayor and City Staff on the Big White Bus

Late this afternoon, a motley crew assembled at City Hall and got on the Northfield Transit bus for a tour around the outskirts of our fair city. The purpose of the trip was to help city officials in the process of reviewing Northfield’s designated Urban Expansion and Priority Growth boundaries as part of the revision [...]

Region’s Number One Concern is Transportation?

In today’s Strib South (February 5th) section there is an article titled “Region’s No. 1 Concern: Transportation”. It discusses the release of a recent survey at the Metropolitan Council’s State of the Region event.
Now, I’m not mentioning the Met Council just ’cause I’m hoping to get former Chamber President Ludescher to weigh in on this [...]

Happy New Year and Back to the Future

Happy New Year from Locally Grown! My wish for 2008 is for a healthier, more productive civil discourse from our online community, and better functioning of our municipal government (elected, appointed, and staff). Who’ll drink to that?
And Now For Something Completely Different: I ran across an interesting piece on the Reuters news [...]

Google Maps Street View now includes Northfield

Northfield-based blogger/teacher/author Ken Wedding alerted me that the Google Maps Street View feature now includes much of Northfield. Their rooftop camera-equipped car evidently made the rounds sometime this summer.

Left: All the streets outlined in blue have been photographed for 360-degree views.
Center: The intersection of 3rd and Washington, facing the library to the [...]

Relevant Studies, Plans, Documents Online

I just created a new top-level page for Documents, e.g. plans, studies, and others of that ilk, found on the tabbed menu bar at the top of the site.
Even though many of these things may be available on the City website, many are not, either because they’re too new, too old, or weren’t done by [...]

Can Kids Walk to School in Northfield?

There’s a growing awareness nationwide that encouraging kids to walk and bike to school may pay off in several ways. Besides all the Norman Rockwellesque feelings the idea engenders, potential benefits include increased physical activity for youth and reduced traffic congestion.
Walking to school is one viable solution to the childhood obesity epidemic, but it takes [...]

Two Opportunities to Comment on Streetscape Plans and Projects

No one can deny Griff’s rapidly developing photographic skills. Just think, some day when his name is mentioned in the same breath as Brady, Capa and Lange, you’ll be able to say “I knew him when…”.
Many of Griff’s images are of the civic “art” known as Streetscape. His photos have included the Library Plaza, the [...]

Hwy 19 MNDOT meeting: unhappy citizens?

In today’s Northfield News, an article by Andrea Nelson titled Unhappy citizens walk out of Hwy 19 meeting; Officials answer questions on overlay, but not widening.
“Vague” is how one citizen deemed Peter Waskiw’s answers to citizen comments and answers at the Minnesota Department of Transportation Highway 19 open house Tuesday night… Several citizens said [...]

The City installed the new streetscape arches yesterday at 3rd and Division St. The one in the left two photos is over the walkway to the river between the Northfield Arts Guild and the Contented Cow. The one in the right two photos is over the walkway between the Archer House and the Nutting [...]

Whither Woodley

The photo at left is of the famous or infamous Prairie - Woodley intersection. At next Monday’s (August 20th) City Council meeting, Agenda Item # 14 is to “Consider Resolution 2007-091 - Ordering Improvement No. 05 - Woodley Street from Prairie Street to Jefferson Parkway and preparation of plans and specifications”.
There has been a buzz [...]

We The People: What One of Them Wants Northfield to Be

In the comments to my previous post about Northfield/Apple Valley, Anne B. said, “I’ve been asking for two years and I don’t have a clue what you and Ross and others want the city to be.” Well, I’d certainly never try to speak for Ross and others, but I’ll take another, more comprehensive crack at [...]

Northfield becoming Cambridge

My daughter Gilly alerted me to the bicycles locked to the railings along the walkway between the Archer House and the Nutting Block… and that someone has taped 5 paper “No bike parking” signs to the railing posts. It reminds me of all the “Don’t lock your bike here!” signs I saw last year [...]
