Northfield Rotary welcomes a Group Study Exchange team from Brazil

Rick Estenson, Vicki Dilley, Lee Dilley, Jean Wakely On Friday morning, Rotarians Lee and Vicki Dilley, Rick Estenson, and Jean Wakely had coffee at GBM with members of Rotary District 4550 from Bahia, Brazil.

The Brazilians are part of a Group Study Exchange (GSE) with Northfield Rotary.

This Rotary blog post from last summer has more details:

Group Study Exchange (GSE) is a unique educational experience that furthers international understanding by providing an opportunity for outstanding business and professional people to study another country, its people, its culture and its institutions.  Each GSE team visits a Rotary district in another country for four weeks.  Team members stay in the homes of Rotarians, if possible, and follow an itinerary of educational and cultural points of interest. Travel and living expenses are covered during the exchange by The Rotary Foundation, Rotarians and Rotary District 5960.

A Rotary District 5960 GSE team will visit Rotary District 4550 in Bahia, Brazil, from April 8, 2012 – May 5, 2012.  The focus of the exchange will be public policy, public health and economic development. Rotary offers this opportunity to spend a month living with local Rotarians and seeing the country in a way few will ever experience.

We met in a conference room at the Neuger Communications Group.

Other attendees: Ross Currier (NDDC), Tami Enfield, Rick Estenson (First National Bank Northfield, NEC, Chamber), Kathy Feldbrugge (Northfield Area Chamber of Commerce), Jody Gunderson (City of Northfield), Beth Kallestad (CRWP), Julie Kildahl, Dave Neuger (Neuger Communications Group, Chamber), Rhonda Pownell (Northfield City Council), Donna Rae Scheffert, Mary Schmelzer (Northfield Enterprise Center),  Justin Volling (St. Olaf student), and Erica Zweifel (Northfield City Council).

Tentative next steps include a community awareness meeting in January, as well as a couple of coworking jellies.

After the meeting, I attended an event at CoCo MSP’s new space in the Grain Exchange Building in downtown Minneapolis.

Here are some photos of what it now looks like, with its:

New outdoor seating at the Goodbye Blue Monday: Alex Beeby, Jane Moline, Justin Stets, Rick Estenson and GBM co-owner Dan RigginsI missed it yesterday but Curtis Tiano took this photo of the first four people to park their rear ends on the new outdoor seating at the Goodbye Blue Monday.

L to R front: Alex Beeby, Jane Moline, Justin Stets, Rick Estenson. They were supervised by GBM co-owner Dan Riggins.

There is a Philadelphia connection to these seats but I don’t know what it is. Vet stadium seats?

Feds intervene at First National Bank of Northfield

First National Bank of Northfield First National Bank of Northfield (FNB) is the second area bank this year to have federal regulators intervene. (Last month, it was Community Resource Bank – blog post here.)

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), the Federal agency that regulates nationally-chartered banks like FNB, has a statement posted to their website that says in part:

Regi featured on APR’s ‘The Story’

Reginaldo Haslett-MarroquinReginaldo Haslett-Marroquin (AKA ‘Regi’) was featured on The Story last week in a piece titled The Fight to Farm. (The Story is distributed by American Public Media (APR), the parent of MPR.)

He’s Executive Director of the Rural Enterprise Center (part of The Main Street Project) and he wrote about being on The Story on his blog, including this:

Although a lot of what came out in The Story was about some of my encounters with racism and discrimination, all of those events happened before I moved to Northfield…
