Someone asked me recently to explain why the Planning Commission “doesn’t like culs-de-sacs”. I have a fondness for culs-de-sac and used to live on one, but they do have some serious shortcomings which, to me, outweigh their pleasant aspect. I was interested to read some new research that clearly quantifies ways in which our American suburban street model, which so dominated the second half of the 20th century, is in fact more dangerous than the traditional grid. At last week’s Union of Youth open house at The Key, I met Kevin Krein, Addy Payne, and Dan Zenner, co-hosts of the KeyMN radio show which airs on Saturday mornings at 9am on KYMN 1080. The show now has its own web site where each episode is blogged with a clickable Flash player. They started podcasting in early December. (continued)
We’d planned to do yesterday’s show all by our lonesomes. But halfway through, Northfield Mayor Mary Rossing stopped by KYMN studios to record an ad for her store and barged in graciously joined us to talk about recent Council decisions on the liquor store and Way Park street closure.

In a Dec. 28 NY Times commentary titled Should the Obama Generation Drop Out?, Charles Murrary argues that “It’s what you can do that should count when you apply for a job, not where you learned to do it.” I know it might be heresy here in the land of cows, colleges and contentment but I tend to agree. Like Murray, I think many employers already believe that a bachelor’s degree has “become education’s Wizard of Oz.” He writes:

The Fund, developed in partnership with the Northfield Area YMCA, was initiated by Just Food to honor Ron’s service on the Just Food Board of Directors and his leadership contributions to the Northfield area community as a whole. (continued)
