I’m giving the commenting system Intense Debate another try. (I ran into a glitch back in January.)
It requires that previous comments be taken off-line while the synchronization takes place. So go outside and enjoy the day!

8 am update: another glitch (sigh). All previous comment tools restored while I await a response from tech support.
What’s happening with the experimentation, Griff?
I’m so glad you asked, Bill. 😉
I’m still waiting to hear from their tech support. (sigh)
I’ve heard back from ID’s tech support and so I will be taking another crack at this tonight.
The Comments feature may be unavailable for much of the evening/early morning hours. Hopefully, things will be resolved one way or another by 6 am Wed. morn.
So far so good. As of 9:15 pm, 11% of the 24,954 comments have been imported to the ID system.
All comments now synched with ID. I'll further customize the options later this morning. (I'm posting this as a Guest.)
Comments don't appear to be numbered anymore, Griff… a major problem in my book. Does IntenseDebate offer that feature?
I also couldn't log in. I tried 2 email addresses to have the system send me my password but it rejected both. Pretty sure I got at least one of them right.
I see that I can edit my own comments.
I've added two ID-provided plugins: it's now easy to embed a YouTube video and add smilies.
😀
A comment thread can now be sorted by Date, Rating, Last Activity. This feature is at the top of the thread.
I've turned on the 'report' feature, which allows anyone to flag/alert me on a comment that they think is inapppropriate. Click the 'report' button brings up a box that says:

I've disabled the Defensio spam filter and turned the Askimet spam filter back on, plus I've enabled the IntenseDebate spam filters.
I've set the link threshhold to 5 which means that any comments containing 5 or more links will be moderated. I'll test this using my other account.
Here are 4 links:
http://northfield.org/
http://northfieldnews.com/
http://www.ci.northfield.mn.us/
http://northfieldguide.com/
Here are 5 links:

http://northfieldguide.com/
http://www.northfieldhistory.org/
Okay, that worked, tho the comment with 5 links ended up in the spam bucket instead of the moderate bucket.
Some text from one's previous comment spills into a new comment box. I'll report that glitch.
I've added the Seesmic plugin
http://seesmic.com/
which allows people to contribute video comments.
I'm posting this using my OpenID account.
If you're unfamiliar with OpenID, see this Wikipedia entry:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenID
This is another test of OpenID, but this time, I clicked the option to login using my OpenID account instead of logging into IntenseDebate.
I'm posting this as a guest and subscribing to additional replies via email so that I can then test whether commenting via email works.
I see that we're now on the next page of comments. Not real obvious.
Mousing over a gravatar shows the person's profile, including blogs and any recent Twitter activity… if the commenter chooses to enable/add that.
Cool.
I've enabled the ID plugins for "sharing/bookmarking" using the AddToAny service.
I've turned on the PollDaddy Embeddable Polls ID plugin.
<a href=”http://www.polldaddy.com/” target=”_blank”>http://www.polldaddy.com/
Now anyone can add a straw poll to a comment thread and annoy the mathematicians. 😉
Editing a comment after turning on the AddToAny sharing feature messes up the code for it. I'll report that glitch and turn off the feature for now.
I'm getting the confirmation emails when I subscribe to this comment thread but I don't seem to be getting the alerts when new comments are added. I'll try again.
Griff,
1) All comments can no longer be seen on my Firefox browser.
2) All comments can no longer be seen on my iPhone's Safari browser.
Problem #3:
My comments now need to be approved by site admins before posting.
Problem #4:
I have to reenter my name and email address every time I type a post.
Problem #5:
I can't find the post that starts:
"Paul Zorn: David L, You asked (of Patrick): >Let's assume that the child/person were 18. In that event,…"
Problem #6:
I can't find my posts containing problems 1-4.
Dang. It looks like comments are getting posted with a timestamp that's several hours ahead, so they're not visble, even though they're approved.
I'm investigating.
Okay, I give up. The problems and glitches kept piling up and getting worse by the hour.
My apologies for the hassles for those of you who tried to comment and had your posts go into the ozones.
I’ve restored all the features that we’ve had for the past month or two, except for Defensio spam which was starting to give me fits… so we’re back to Askimet for now.
[…] know, I’m a glutton for punishment, but since I’ve already wasted umpteen hours today on trying to implement the IntenseDebate commenting system, I might as well try one more. […]
