Hey Charlotte: how about getting Bardwell a new sweater for Xmas?

As a bit of a fashion maven, I noticed that Bardwell Smith was wearing the same sweater at Just Food Co-op’s 5-year anniversary wingding last night that he wore for its grand opening in 2004

I did a search of the photo archives at Carleton College and found a 1953 photo of him.

It shows that he began wearing sweaters of questionable taste in his senior year at Carleton in 1953. Will someone please alert his wife, Charlotte Smith, that an intervention is needed?

I am amazed at the poor taste of these comments! Good wool lasts forever. Some of us collect well designed, well made winter woolens which look good forever. We wear them with real satisfaction and deep pride. Has the author of this blog never owned such a beloved sweater/jacket?

I see Bardwell nearly daily at Carleton these days and am frequently jealous of his cozy, warm sweaters. Give ’em a break, he’s warmer than me!

My friend Griff knows a good sweater when he sees one. I’m inviting him to pick one of my nine for his next birthday! I don’t need that many! 🙂

Oh, by the way, I was not in the Class of 1953. In fact, I didn’t go to Carleton at all, but I’ve made up for that mistake by being at Carleton for the last 50 years (as of 2010). My Class was 1950. Guess where? It was after being a pfc in the U.S. Marine Corps (1944-46). Carleton has been better than both of the others.

Bardwell, my sweaters are all pretty ratty so I’d be pleased to pick one of yours for my birthday next year.

I’m glad you discovered my lies about your Alma Mater. I figured you graduated in 1953 when I read this blurb about you and Charlotte in the 2009 Yale Divinity School Alumni newsletter, the Spectrum, but I goofed, forgetting that YDS is a graduate school:

Last fall Charlotte and Bardwell Smith ’53 B.D. spent five weeks in Tucson where he was working with his co-author on a book dealing with Japanese women and child loss, and Charlotte was expanding her manuscript on their son Sam’s Korean birth mother. During that time Charlotte and Bardwell read out loud to each other the extraordinary book by Doris Kearns Goodwin, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln (2005).

So as to your challenge on where you graduated from college… hmmmm. Yale?
