The hell with New Year’s resolutions. Instead: 6 habits. Join me

new-year Last week, I got a tweet from Brian Clark alerting me to a blog post titled The Definitive Guide to Sticking to Your New Year’s Resolutions by Leo Babauta, author of The Power of Less and the Zen Habits blog (follow him on Twitter). As you’ll see if you read that post, Leo’s got a new blog called 6changes dedicated to his 6 Changes Method.

The appeal of his approach was immediate to me, especially tackling one habit at a time, taking baby steps, and using ‘triggers.’ And since two of the 6 steps involve public accountability, blogging my progress makes sense. Want to join me?

Two years ago, I blogged my intent to implement Getting Things Done and sought a small group of other Northfielders to join me.  I found 4 others and we did meet several times as a group but I failed to make it stick. Reading 6 Changes, I think I now know why.

I’m not sure yet which 6 habits I’m going to develop this year. But in a day or two I’ll decide which one I’ll start with and I’ll post it here, with my anticipated starting date (that’s one of his strategies).

Hey, no hijacking this message thread for fun or fluff!  😉

I’ve made my selection for my first habit to work on starting next Monday, Jan. 11.  It’s actually two related habits, #2 and #3 of the Zen to Done (ZTD) process, Leo Babauta’s adaptation of David Allen’s GTD which, as I blogged above, I tried and failed at:

ZTD attempts to address five problems that many people have with GTD. I should note that GTD isn’t really flawed, and doesn’t really need modification, but everyone is different, and ZTD is a way to customize it to better fit different personality types.

I’ve been very tempted to start working on this NOW but I’m going to heed his advice to build anticipation for habit change. It’s on my calendar in 3 different slots.

  6. I wonder how some of you are going to do after your body fails and your soul energy is floating around in eternity with no plan and no computer. If I see you, I’ll wave and point the way to the nearest coffee shop. 😉
