A couple of summers ago, the intersection of Woodley and Prairie streets temporarily had a 4-way stop and a crosswalk. Those have since been removed. Rice County and the City of Northfield are now engaged in a project to widen and make safety improvements to Woodley Street (CSAH 28) between Prairie Street and Jefferson Parkway (download PDF here or view the project page).
Some residents are concerned that the proposed design will increase the speed of traffic on Woodley. A public meeting regarding this project will be held on Wednesday, June 20th, 2007 at City Hall, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM, with a formal presentation starting at 6:30. The public meeting may be the last opportunity to voice concerns before the final public meeting in March 2008. (Construction will begin shortly thereafter, so it will be difficult to change the design at that point.)
(A tip of the hat to resident John Thomas. For more details or discussion of neighborhood activism, John has given permission to contact him via e-mail. To avoid spam, I won’t post his address normally, but I assume most of our readers are real humans who can understand how to translate this into the conventional forms required by their mail program: MRJST [at-sign] charter (dot) net. )
I just had a conversation with Katy Gehler,
the Assistant City Engineer for the City of Northfield.
She wanted me to pass along the fact, that if you are unable to attend the meeting, to go to the comment area on the project website, and submit your comments. These comments will be taken and entered just like the written comment cards at the public meeting.

If anyone has any questions about the need for a crosswalk at this location, please feel free to contact me.

Thanks for the heads-up, John. I’ve blogged the website and today’s meeting.
