Statistics Revealed!

jerry-acoustic.jpgOkay Kiffi, you’ve waited long enough, it’s time I revealed the traffic statistics for Locally Grown.

Hey, did you know that today is Jerry Garcia’s birthday? Jerry played an important role in my development as a musician. Not only did he introduce many songwriters to me by covering their pieces in the Grateful Dead, his work with a number of other groups, including Old and in the Way, the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band, and Cats Under the Stars, helped broaden my musical tastes beyond blues-rock.

As Bob Dylan said on Jerry’s death in 1995, “There are a lot of spaces and advances between the Carter Family, Buddy Holly, and, say, Ornette Coleman, a lot of universes, but he filled them all without being a member of any school”. The space between the Carter Family and Ornette Coleman holds American music, Jerry not only filled that space but he shared it with all who listened.

Now, what was it that I was going to reveal?

I thought Griff was the weird one, but now Ross is giving him a run for his money. I hope Tracy manages to hold onto her sanity.

No kidding, Rob. Tracy’s out of town so I have to do the podcast today with Ross by myself. My first question: “Man, what are you smoking?!”

There, is that “newz” more to your liking?

Hey, Ross. I think you might be on to “something!” Is that the same “newz” story where They found out the erratic bike driver with the golf clubs was actually the president of the chamber who was forced to bike because someone from the Mill Town trail committee stole his bike? I heard that the Martian skateboarder ran into him and the reason he was wobbling was because he was dizzy from the fall, not because he was smoking pot, which was originally reported. By the way, the 400 pound Jack Russell Terrier is said to be fine and sustained no injuries in the crash. I think I heard that the terrier’s name was Griff. Can anyone verify that? I did see a photo of Griff somewhere and he looked pretty beat up. Maybe the “newz” reporting that the terrier was okay was wrong. What have you heard?

Guess what else I just heard. The superintendant of schools was just seen riding his bike with a sign over his shoulders that said, “Yes, I am listening.” Apparently he was trying to make a point that the school district did not have their heads in the sand on the issue of “car trafficing.” The cars were all lined up behind him as he rode, because they didn’t dare pass him.

Because of the traffic problems, the mayor initiated a special task force to look into the issue. I know that a warning gainst biking in a suit and tie in 90+ degree weather was posted on the PFB (Parents for Bussing) website. I believe John B. is the chair. However, there is apparently no conflict of interest in this case.

What a “logical” conclusion, Ross. The 400 lb. number must have been off. After all, Griff does not weigh 400 lbs. Was it the police chief that stated that figure?

Have you not learned by now that in Northfield you have to be careful what you say, Kiffi? I am just hoping the Strib picks up on all this chatter. 8:0 (I think that is right. I forget what they are called.)

(Being self employed has its pros and cons. When you get tired of entering inventory, like I have been doing today, you can hop on the internet and find out all kinds of “worthwhile” information. You can even post “stupid” blogs! :))

In all seriousness, and just to be clear, not all blogs on LG have been stupid.

    LG is a blog.
Ross, Tracy and I author blog posts or entries. We ‘blog.’
You and the teeming masses attach comments to our posts.

    So it would either be:

“… not all the blog posts on LG have been stupid”

    or

“… not all the comments on LG have been stupid”

Now say 5 our fathers and 5 hail marys and make a good act of contrition.

..uh, waittaminute, uh…couldn’t Christine also mean “Not all the blog posts and the resulting comments on LG have been stupid”?

or as Griff oft says: Heh…

Using the David Ludescher Scale of Remark Evaluation, all the rest are surely stupid .

This all reminds me of Ole Honest (that’s ole as in old, not Oles as in too many scandinavians… in any event) Honest Abe’s muse about fooling some of the people some of the time etc etc etc…

    Here it would be

“… Some post are stupid some of the time

“… Some post are stupid all of the time

“… All post are stupid all of the time

In that case, I’m troubled by mine being included there somewhere.

Griff and Ross: Maybe “stupid” is not the right word as it connotates words like “dull” and “slow.” The words “comical” is probably a better one. That would include the SOME of the blogs and SOME of the comments.

Victor: I think we all say and do “stupid” things, but that does not mean that EVERYTHING we say is stupid or that we ARE stupid. I think that even David asks some good questions. I know, I have asked some “stupid” ones! We are all human. Also, people that make bad decisions are not necessarily bad people.

To use the form of logic you used:

“… Some people make bad decisions some of the time.”
“… Some people make bad decisions all of the time.”
“… All people make bad decisions all of the time.”

I think this invalid logic is a good thing to be reminded of as we deal with the issues that have been revealed this summer–both the drug issues and the city hall issues. It is also good to remember that we are not just dealing with issues; we are dealing with people.

A couple of wise old sayings come to mind:
    – Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.
    – Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Don’t be troubled, Victor. We are all in the same boat (whether we like it or not) because we are human. Hey, that gives me an idea! What if we had streams instead of streets so people could canoe to work? Now, that’s an idea!

Hey, not so fast Victor. In the winter the streams could be used to skate on. That would make all the hockey fans happy! We could turn our town into a giant rec. center!!! Oh, how about giant slides? We could have water in them during the summer (cooler than biking) and snow in the winter!

On a calmer note, maybe the “bridge to nowhere” could be viewed as the “bridge over troubled waters.” Hey, Ross, I know that one too. 🙂

That’s Ok, in a time when the Feds (FEMA) are trying to sell their unused, but mold contaminated trailers to Indian Reservations (Does ANYONE remember the Army’s used smallpox contaminated blankets being given to the Cherokee on the “Trail of Tears” ? ) it fits……. The only more callous thing is that this time the gov’t ( OUR gov’t ) is SELLING the contamination..

Here is a quote from Buffy St. Marie that relates to the lyrics I posted above:

“Sometimes I am asked, where did all the brain and fire of the sixties American Indian activism go? In my observation, in Canada we went into every field; but in the United States, where things were far more dangerous, those of us who were not killed, imprisoned, put out of business or otherwise sacrificed to the uranium industry, went into education. If I have a message in this scant overview,
it is this: real Indian people are rising to the potential of the technology, in school and out. We were born for this moment and we are solidly behind our pathfinders.”

The part that stood out to me is “…education.” Can we learn something from that?

Tracy’s right, deadhead is a verb… as in:

The unsettled attorney drove his six blocks to work each day… finding no parking spot close by, drove off another 4 or 5 then walked the way back to his office… where he indulged himself playing on the internet much of the day posting e-mail comments… then DEADHEADED home at the end of a fruitless work day empty handed…

Not too worry David… just good old country banter. You understand that, right?

Seems like we’ve locked verbal horns a lot over the past 10 years… on or off the campaign trails. Neither of us every one an election… unless you’re counting the Chamber Pres role. I’ll count the Board Pres of the Center for Sustainable living then. So I consider our voices sort of slanted.

But, take heart. Look at it this way, You were interviewed on LG’s Pod Cast. You and that RR guy from Lakeville, both made the big time. And IMHO both have dim views on the benefits of tradition.

On the way home you are safe. If you’re worried, I’ll come by and walk with you. By the way, should I have felt threatened when you mentioned drowning to me at the last plan Commission meeting we both attended?

Now, back to the serious issue of Locally Grown traffic statistics. Oh, yeah. We haven’t had any.
