NHS DECA club creates a sign for the Northfield YMCA’s new location

I got an email earlier this week from Emily Monaghan, Vice Chair of  the Northfield Area Family YMCA board:

I have a story that might be fun for you to cover for Locally Grown Northfield involving a unique partnership between the Nfld High School DECA group and the Y.  Tomorrow night at 7PM the DECA students will unveil to the Y board of directors the "Future Home of the Nfld Y" sign that they designed/created that will be installed on the new Y property this coming Sunday.  We will meet tomorrow in the high school Woods (shop) room for the unveiling and a pizza party to follow.  Then, we will gather again at 4PM Sunday to install the new sign on the new property.

The sign was installed this morning on the future site for the Y (east of Target on Honey Locust Drive), but it’ll remain covered until the unveiling ceremony at 4 pm Sunday.

Here’s the press release on the sign’s unveiling ceremony:

NORTHFIELD AREA FAMILY YMCA UNVEILS LAND-MARKING SIGN DURING CEREMONY

    Our sign is up!

The sign marking the site for the future home of the Northfield Area Family YMCA on Honeylocust Drive was unveiled to the public during a ceremony Sunday, Nov. 20.

Members of Y’s Board of Directors—as well as Y employees, supporters and residents—attended the event, which was conducted under sunny, yet chilly skies.

Speaking during the 20-minute ceremony were Y Board Chair Mari Aylin, Northfield Mayor Mary Rossing, Northfield High School Principal Joel Leer, Emmaus Church Senior Pastor Will Healy, Northfield business leader and longtime Y supporter Brett Reese, and Northfield YMCA Executive Director and CEO Virginia Kaczmarek.

Serving as the backdrop to the speakers was the land-marking sign designed and constructed by Northfield High School DECA Club members. DECA is a business club for high schoolers interested in marketing, finance, hospitality and management.
Many of the students taking part in the community service project, as well as DECA Advisor Julie Wolner, attended Sunday’s event.

Fundraising efforts are underway for the new YMCA, which is expected to open to the public in 2013.
