My guess is John, Vicky & Bernie are checking to see if the city abides by the building code.

Making sure that the newly installed handicapped access ramp, is in fact wide enough (with the railing installed) to accomodate wheelchairs?

John and Lisa, you are both correct. And the mystery woman on the left, my main squeeze, just happened to have a tape measure in her purse when it occurred to Bernie to check the width.

Due to the on-going local interest in building codes and Building Officials, I share the following, which serves as one more example of the complexity of building code issues and their enforcement.

To wit, federal buildings are in fact exempt from the Americans with Disabilities Act but must comply with the Architectural Barriers Act (this was a new code to me, not for long though – heh).

Additionally, the local Building Official does not review Federal projects.
