The skate park will open in Riverside Park this week

Future temporary home of the skatepark in Riverside Park Northfield skateboarders
While riding my bike though Riverside Park last night, I noticed that the blacktop pad has been recently seal coated.  A few minutes later, I got the official word from these skateboarders that the temporary skate park will open sometime this week.

May 24 update:  Installation began yesterday afternoon. See these photos:

Cecilia Cornejo was capturing video of the process. More about her work in this Nfld News article: Northfield Skate Park Coalition becomes subject of documentary.

May 26 update: All the equipment is in place and was evidently in use last night. Photos:

The PRAB met on Thursday, and the subcommittee on siting a permanent skatepark was on the agenda. Does anyone know what was discussed, and whether the process is moving forward in a timely manner?

I’m glad the kids will have this for this summer. I recognize it’s not ideal. Unfortunately, there seems to be NO ideal place.

Rob, I’ve not heard. In the minutes from the previous PRAB mtg:

    Permanent Site for Skateboard Park

Chair Knutson recommended that a small committee be formed to investigate sites for possible permanent sites and liaison with stakeholders from each site. They should look at what has already been completed. The group was asked to have their recommendations to the PRAB by the October PRAB meeting to dovetail with the review of the temporary site.

The PRAB addressed the Skateboard Coalition as to their funding for a permanent site. They wanted assurances that the group would still be investing in the site. Amy Merritt spoke to the PRAB saying that they would still be investing their funds for a permanent site. Not all funding up front, but to develop on a piece by piece basis.

The following PRAB members will form the committee to study sites for the permanent location of the skateboard park.

    David Hvistendahl
    Neil Lutsky
Grace Clark ( Chair Knutson will discuss this position with G. Clark)

I understand that concrete is favored over asphalt for skateboard surfaces. Hmm, I wonder how skateboarders feel about poetry….

There are two trash containers in place. But no outhouse yet on the small concrete pad. Hopefully, that’ll be in place soon.

Griff, we got an update at VOC that there will be a sign stating full bathrooms over by the picnic shelter are to be used, agreed to by T.J. and Amy. (Could use the outhouse at Lions Park, too, one would think.)

If everything goes as planned, I will have a front row deck at VOC in late June from which to watch the skateboarders to their thing! Any takers?

I’m starting to see a fair amount of litter around the skate park, as well as around the end of 7th street where it dead-ends at Riverside in front of Village on the Cannon.

Seems like there’s going to be a need for the youth to monitor that in an organized way.
