In this 8-minute video, Dr. Charles “Charlie” Reznikoff, addiction medicine specialist, answered my questions after talking to an audience of about 24 people on the subject of heroin addiction during a public presentation at the Northfield Hospital on Monday night.

A full video of the presentation will air on Northfield’s public access television station (NTV).

Wow! That was interesting. I particularly liked what he had to say about the different aspects of prevention.

For the about the past two years, I’ve had google news alerts set for phrases like: “heroin, high school”, “heroin, small towns” and “heroin, suburbs”. It seemed unlikely to me that Northfield’s experience with heroin addiction could be unique. Every few months, there would be a new story. Sadly, this summer there has been a large increase in the number of stories. There are stories from WA state, CO, MA, OH, MI, MA, WI and more. Three new stories today:

I heard a rumor that Hastings, MN has a problem. The Hastings newspaper wasn’t very helpful. But this link showed up today also:

Bill, I take it that lazylightening is your website and you’re the author of said articles. Thanks for commenting here.

Is any body doing anything about this problem in the southern metro? It seems that other than your articles, and brief mentions in the Hasting’s Newspaper that this is flying under the radar.

Yes, lazylightning is my website and I am the author of both. Thanks for linking to me, I always appreciate the added exposure and traffic.

Aside from the vague comments made by the Dakota County Drug Task Force officer I spoke with, it doesn’t seem like it. I know that my prodding of local media has prompted at least one reporter to delve into local crime a bit deeper than they have been but local city councils are too concerned with flower baskets in their faux downtowns and roundabouts where they are not needed to concern themselves with spending money appropriately to fund public safety officers to control the issues we are seeing.

It’s a difficult situation for city councils–to admit that their poor budget choices are having an immediate and direct negative effect on the people that voted for them.
