At last week’s Manzone 2009 planning meeting, Mike Herman of Culligan got standing ovation and an award for his contributions of time and manpower for the 2008 and 2009 events. The event is being held this week on Friday, January 30 from 5-9 pm at the Community Resource Bank main branch on Hwy 3. (continued)
See the blog post from ManZone 2008 and this year’s flyer (from Joey Robison) for more. Co-organizer Machelle Kendrick (center photo with Mark Mueller-Dahl) sent me the photos.
It’s time once again for ManZone, the entertaining event focused on men’s health that is absolutely FREE (held at the Community Resource Bank main branch on Hwy 3)! Men and women alike will enjoy listening to live music, checking out the new Harley-Davidsons and Fords, sampling good food from Beef ‘O’ Brady’s and Thousand Hills Cattle Company, and getting a free chair massage. There will also be free hot shaves and haircuts by Buzz Salon, a bench press contest by Northfield Athletic, free gun locks from the Northfield Police Department, and much more.
This year is especially exciting because nationally recognized dog trainer Tom Dokken will be giving a free presentation at 7:30 p.m. Tom trained Ron Shearer’s dog Raven and Hank Williams Jr’s dog Dakota. In addition, there are hundreds of dollars in door prizes that will be given away throughout the evening.
If you missed last year’s event, make sure to mark your calendar for ManZone 2009, held at the Community Resource Bank main branch on Hwy 3 on Friday, January 30 from 5-9 p.m.
The great flyer was designed by Lisa Gillispie. This event is going to be a real hoot- especially the bench press contest! These community health events are a real labor of love for their volunteer organizers. For those folks who attended the ManZone last year, I’m curious, what did you like about it? Did you learn anything new?
And, for those who did attend ManZone last year- please know that this year… we will bring back the familiar fun with some brand new twists.
Tom Dokken, a well known dog trainer will join us at ManZone 2009. He will be presenting at 7:30 pm and will be bringing in his dog. Seating is limited — come early.

Other surprises and prizes in store– so if you didn’t make it last year, this year promises to be even better! And, if you did come last year, please know that this event offers new entertainment and educational opportunities (free of charge)for men and those who love them!
Cranking up for ManZone 2009 — what a great headline, Griff! If we do it again in 10 — this will be our theme!
To everyone reading this, this event is going to be great! Where else or for what else can you get so many people involved to present something of this magnitude for FREE!
This is the second year in which I have had the honor of being involved and I can say the people that are involved are great. What a dedicated Team!
Come out Friday evening and see for yourself, I promise you will be amazed!!!!
Joey, Machelle, Mike – thanks for chiming in here. I plan to be there on Friday taking photos of Ross winning the bench press contest.
There’s a lot of buzz going around town about the ManZone! I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else this Friday, January 30th from 5:00 to 9:00 PM. Come for some great food (Beef O’Brady’s & Thousand Hills Cattle Co.)! Haircuts! Hot shaves! Live music (Todd Thompson Trio)(Hometown Band)! Massages! Bench Press Contest! Harley Davidson! Just Food! These are only a few of what you’ll experience at this year’s ManZone. Did I mention that it’s this Friday, January 30th from 5:00 to 9:00 PM? Come and join us again for this great event. I promise it’s tons of fun and absolutely free!
Oh my, NOBODY should miss watching Ross win the bench press contest!
Hey Griff — all that racquetball you play must really build up some Popeye-like muscles. Perhaps you can put down the camera and show Ross up? Mark Mueller-Dahl must have that same upper body strength from his time on the racquetball court with you, I think he should be benchpressing as well in this contest. (And, by the way… isn’t the Northfield Athletic racquetball tournament coming up?)
I was thinking about Joey’s questions- did I learn anything new last year as a man concerned about his health? I was and exhibitor last year as well as this year– but I did check out other booths. It was actually at the Just Food booth that I had a take-away and it was about “thinking about my food.” I also added a Omega 3 supplement to my diet based at what I learned at the Just Food booth. I support my local coop (sometimes twice a day!) and I find my coop supports me too!
Also, Joey doesn’t blow her horn — so I will. She has been an important part of this event. Thanks for all you do Joey.
Machelle, I didn’t attend last year’s ManZone because it conflicted with the racquetball tournament (Super Bowl Splat) at the Northfield Athletic Club. Alas, this year, too. Decisions decisions!
Tom Dokken is an expert (and local!) dog trainer. He trains hunting dogs and house dogs: dogs are usually both at one time, actually, since most hunting dogs are also house dogs. He’s very approachable and knowledgeable, so bring your dog questions! He’ll bring his dog to the event for a helpful and fun demonstration at 7:30!
I’m presenting on the topic of child support at 6:30 at Chris Webber’s PrimeVest area (near the entrance to Community Resource Bank). The dog training and child support presentations are both at the PrimeVest area (Thanks Chris for the use of your office space!). I’ll be answering questions and presenting information about child support. I’ll be giving out $5 Chamber Buck gift certificates to the first 10 adults at my 6:30 presentation! I’m one of the few people that I know that get’s excited talking about child support and it’s because I know how families can reduce conflict and support their children appropriately by calculating child support correctly! Bring your questions to my free presentation!
ManZone presentations:
6:30 Carl Arnold – Child Support
7:30 Tom Dokken – Dog Training
This definitely sounds like a fun time :). In all of my years of doing fairs and public events I don’t know that I have ever been to one that has a bench press contest, so I will definitely have to make sure I don’t miss that! I know that HOPE Center is excited to present and for people to find out more ways to build a healthier, happier Northfield. We are looking forward to it!!

A surprise for me at last year’s Manzone event was watching how many men had their hands dipped in spa oils and hand moisturizers from one of the presenters. I guess this tis the season for dry skin and the age of equality when it comes to skin care!
I appreciated the diversity in what was at the event – looking forward to Friday!
I am excited about Manzone. Last year was big but this year, Wow! With everyone I have been in contact this week, either are as excited as I am or have heard about it and are curious about it. I can’t wait for friday.
Hey Virginia! (is this your first time on Locally Grown?!)I didn’t get to see the men dipping their hands in spa oils– buy holy noodles! I did see a lot of men sporting new haircuts. I even seen a guy walk in with long hair and walk out with a mohawk– no kidding. This year it’s a shave and haircut — without the two bits. Nice!
CAN YOU BELIEVE IT, MANZONE IS THIS FRIDAY
After much hard work from many wonderful people Northfield is honored with another free Mens Health event that promises to be grander than the last one . With all the Prizes, Massages, Haircuts, Hot Shaves, and more how can it not be the place to be this FRIDAY NIGHT from 5 to 9. Come make some connections with people who care .
Griff, Lucky you NO GAMES FRIDAY for the SuperBowl Splat last I heard from Chad at NFLD.ATHLETIC CLUB
It is one day left before the big event… (yikes! — so much to do!!) I am having lunch today with Martha Kasper and I will get the first peek at the 100 Good Men banner…
100 Good Men in the Northfield Area agreed to commit or recommit to their health in 2009, attend the ManZone event as proof of this commitment and to let us use their names on this banner that will greet everyone who attends the event. Martha Kasper of Edina Realty sponsored and volunteered for this 100 Good Men project.
Well, Machelle, lunch was great, and boy, do we have a great thing for everyone to see when they come to the ManZone tomorrow night! What did you think of the banner?
Machelle – Once again your enthusiasm is infectious! Congrats on all the hard work that has gone into this event. I’m sure it will be a HUGE success! And thanks for making Minnesota a little more handsome, well-groomed & most importantly…healthy.
REMINDER: ManZone starts at 5 PM tonight.
