When Tracy Gives You Tomatoes, Make Sauce

eating_spaghetti.jpgSometimes my colleague, Tracy Davis, tosses tomatoes. However, now and then, she serves up some brilliantly spiced Salse di Pomodoro. The later pitch would be the case earlier this week.

Tracy sent me a link to a site that points to a potential economic development tool…the creative class. The assorted analyses tend to focus on rural areas but college towns stand out as strong perfomers in the studies. Among the findings of interest to me are that communities that attract and nourish the creative class enjoy higher incomes, higher rates of job growth, and “higher rates of patent formation and manufacturing technology adoption”.

I’ve only had time to scratch the surface of this potentially valuable resource. If you’re interested in the topic, I’d urge you to check out the Amber Waves site and share your comments with us here at Locally Grown. Griff, Tracy and I are always interested in new recipes for tomato sauce.

Cook County, Minnesota, is a hiking and canoeing area, but it also has the oldest active artist colony in Minnesota. With a playhouse and a music association, it is where “culture merges with woods and water” (Grand Marais Chamber of Commerce).

Hmm. What does Northfield’s culture merge with?

    Hey Tracy:

I like the Cows, Colleges and Culture.

I’ve heard the joke about Cows, Colleges and Contention but I’d like to propose an alternative…

    …Cows, Colleges and Collaborations.

    See you downtown,
