Congrats to the Northfield News for winning the Minnesota Newspaper Association’s 2008 Mills Trophy for ‘most outstanding weekly newspaper in Minnesota.’ See the article in last Wednesday’s paper titled Newspaper wins top state award.  It’s the first time the paper has won the award. Reporter David Henke was honored as the New Journalist of the Year in the contest’s weekly division… Henke also shared a first-place award with managing editor Jaci Smith and senior reporter Suzanne Rook for Best Investigative Reporting for the News’ July series “Heroin: One Year Later.” … Smith also took home first place in the Best Sports Feature category for a story on Northfield High School football team kicking coach Larry Sanftner… Rook also took two firsts and a second in the contest. She was given a first for Best Social Issue Feature, for “Jake’s Story,” a three-part piece that served as the centerpiece for “Heroin: One Year Later.” … Rook’s other first came for Best Local News Story for a December 2007 piece reporting on an independent investigator’s findings that the then mayor, Lee Lansing, had acted inappropriately.

    Griff, You are a little late on the ‘uptake’ about the News’ many honors.I am so grateful that the Northfield News is my hometown paper. Kudos to Jaci, David and, of course, the outstanding, diligent reporting of Suzi Rook.
