Joseph Mbele and I would like to invite interested seniors a ‘chance of a lifetime’ to visit Africa this summer.

    Educational Tour to Tanzania

Spend two weeks in Tanzania, one of the most stable countries in Africa. Visit some of its world-known national parks: Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Lake Manyara. Get a glimpse of Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. Meet the laid-back Tanzanians, famous for their friendliness. Visit schools and markets, shops and restaurants, churches and mosques, in a country where people of different races and religions live together in harmony. There is more: you will visit Olduvai, the home of the earliest ancestors of the human race, and Bagamoyo, an ancient sleepy city on the Indian Ocean coast, which used to be a major center of the slave trade. You will walk on its gorgeous sandy beaches and explore its historical and cultural sites. Then you will head off to Tanga, further up the coast, a great center of the old Swahili civilization. The trip will emphasize interactions with the local people, including home visits.

This is a great opportunity for students and adults to see Tanzania’s natural beauty, the diversity of its people, their social life and culture. You will gain an insight into the lives of children, gender issues, and the impact of globalization on a third world country. On some evenings, you will listen to African folktales told by Joseph Mbele, who enjoys sharing his native culture and folklore.

The trip guides are Joseph Mbele and Larry Fowler, experienced educators who enjoy leading Americans on study tours abroad. As a Tanzanian, Joseph will even teach you some Swahili words and phrases, which you can practice on the locals. They love it.

Through this two-week learning and cultural immersion opportunity, students will gain social studies credit.
