I stopped by the Lorence’s Berry Farm aisle stand at Just Food Co-op on Saturday where Gayle Lorence was giving shoppers tastes of their strawberry jam and raspberry jam, spread on oatmeal bread from Brick Oven Bakery. Yum! I picked up a bottle of their raspberry syrup. Gayle’s business card says that their asparagus is ready to pick in May, strawberries in June, and raspberries July through September.
I can personally attest to the geat quality of what Sean & Gayle produce. My son-in-law has been a permanent weekend fixture the last few years helping them on their farm. He brings home some of whatever is in season, and it is all top-notch. Besides, Sean & Gayle are just great folks.
The berry farm is one of the farm operations expected to suffer negative impacts from the 530-acre industrial park in Greenvale Township. Getting some protection from land grabs like this in the future was, I thought, the main reason for a mutual annexation agreement between Northfield and the township. Unfortunately, I see no such terms in it (see Bonnie Obremski’s reports “Greenvale signs annexation agreement.”
It happens today is township election day. Perhaps the best way Greenvale residents can respond to all this is at the polls. The new township hall is 31800 Guam Ave, voting hours 10 am through 8 pm.
