Father Denny Dempsey, annual celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe, St. Dominc Catholic Church, NorthfieldOne of the GBM morning regulars, Jose Rodriguez (“Hey you tender white boys!”), alerted me to yesterday’s annual celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe at St. Dominic Catholic Church here in Northfield. (On the church’s Comunidad Hispana web page: “St. Dominic is the spiritual home for the majority of the 1,500 people of Hispanic descent living in Northfield.”)

I got permission from my former seminarian buddy, Father Denny Dempsey, to take photos at the 5 PM Mass featuring “traditional Mexican dance, meal, and Mariachi band.”

Vikings-logo I agree with Republican activist Andy Brehm who has a commentary in today’s Strib: The Vikings? Great. Gambling? Not good. "Dick Day’s proposal to pay for a stadium with proceeds from a ‘racino’ sounds painless, but would in fact be very damaging." That would be soon-to-be-lobbyist Senator Dick Day.

I also agree with Craig Cox, a former colleague at Utne Reader, who chastised the Strib in his letter to the editor last week for not asking Vikings owner Zygi Wilf some hard questions:

Sesquicentennial Governor’s Ball Northfield’s last big ball was the 2005 Sesquicentennial Governors Ball. Next week will rival it: NAG’s Beaux Arts Ball, part of Northfield Arts Guild’s 50th Anniversary season. I’ll be there with my sweetie, hopefully 1) not stepping on her dancing shoes; and 2) taking better photos than this one.

You can purchase tickets online here.

We got this via email yesterday from Doug Peterson, retired Northfield Public Schools guidance counselor.

Doug Peterson Northfield held its Christmas Sharing program this week that involves a large number of  residents. The idea of giving to others in the community started about 40 years ago when Mary Dyer-Bennet and friends collected used toys to be distributed by the Northfield Police Department. This year the expanded project served 363 families with 889 children.
