We were all pretty perky for this week’s show, handing out some kudos here and there while we discussed a bunch of local issues that I can’t quite remember as I write this.

The current issue of The Atlantic has a story titled Fixing Lunch that includes the problems associated with “crap food” in the vending machines in schools. The Northfield School Board apparently last changed the Wellness policy (PDF) back in May of 2006 (PDF) and directed the District Wellness Committee to develop new vending machine guidelines for the 06-07 year. It hasn’t been done, as far as I can tell. The vending machines in the photos are at the Northfield High School. (continued)

The White House is hosting a H1N1 Summit today and sent out an email (text below) urging communities to begin public H1N1 preparedness/awareness campaigns. As far as I can tell, there’s no H1N1 preparedness happening in Northfield. There’s no information on the City of Northfield’s Emergency Information web page, nor on the Northfield Hospital’s Emergency Communication & Disaster Planning web page, nor on the Northfield School District’s site. “The shocking incident happened just at six o’clock. The boys were enjoying a boat ride above the dam and came down stream at full speed . . . Whether the steering gear was at fault or the engine was not working properly seems to be a conjecture, but the swiftly raging waters drew the boat and its living load toward the brink of the dam. Sunday’s NY Times Magazine had an article titled The Case for Working With Your Hands which is adapted from the new book, Shop Class as Soulcraft: An Inquiry Into the Value of Work by Mathew Crawford (available in downtown Northfield at Monkey See Monkey Read). I started getting interested in this topic back in March after reading the comments to my blog post, Whither the clocks of the Middle School Industrial Technology classes? It was brought home to me last week when a guy in my motorcycle trials club, Jim ‘Bubba’ Blount, diagnosed my carburetion problems just by listening to my bike. (continued)
