Sidewalk bicycling: still a problem downtown

It’s time for my annual whine about those who ride bikes on the downtown sidewalks. (See the Sep. 2007 blog post w/ 32 comments and Sep. 2008 blog post w/ 26 comments). City Admin Joel Walinksi has an update in the April 17 Friday Memo:

To improve safety regarding sidewalk bike riders in the downtown, the community service officer will be dedicating more time to public education involving those bike riders that disregard the city ordinance. Maggie Lee announced as the recipient of the 2009 DJJD Heywood Award

Maggie Lee was informed about 30 minutes ago that she’s the the 2009 recipient of the Joseph Lee Heywood Distinguished Service Award. The award “… is given to a Northfield citizen who exemplifies the commitment to public service which Joseph Lee Heywood lived and died for.”

The announcement was made at the Northfield News where Maggie works. (See the album of a dozen photos here.) Maggie will be honored at the Defeat of Jesse James Days Heywood Award Dinner in September. Here are two albums that feature Maggie from 2004. (continued)

The pros and cons of the dueling education proposals at the Capitol

House DFLers release education proposal: “The plan is the latest in a series of dueling education proposals at the Capitol that are playing out as a kind of ‘Three Bears’ scenario. The Senate education bill cuts funding for schools, the governor’s proposal increases funding and the House version keeps funding flat. “

It’s not clear yet where our Northfield-area legislators stand on these education proposals, as neither David Bly nor Kevin Dahle has blogged anything specific about them. (continued)
