The July August issue of the Citizens League’s monthly newsletter, MN Journal has an article by evaluator Bill Johnston titled The final analysis: What MAP 150 taught us about citizen involvement and engagement (p. 7). It includes this startling statement: "Dialogue is more important to citizen perceptions of authentic involvement than the effect on outcomes." I was shocked to read in yesterday’s Northfield News (Transit study suggests tunnel under highway) that the Bolton and Menk consultants have drawn up conceptual plans for putting a tunnel under the Hwy 19 railroad tracks by Malt-O-Meal. When Tracy blogged about Hwy 3/Hwy 19 transportation study open house a few weeks back, I had no idea that we’d be paying consultants to look at a tunnel. This seems like a wildly extravagant idea and a waste of money to study, no matter if it’s local dollars or Federal dollars. Or am I missing something? (continued)
In last week’s NY Times: Home Burials Offer an Intimate Alternative. “In an economic downturn, the do-it-yourself ethos extends to families burying their own loved ones, sometimes in their backyards.” I had no idea. Are there Northfield area death midwives (home funeral guides)? Do our local funeral homes (Bierman Funeral Home; Benson and Langehough Funeral Home) provide support for family-directed funerals?
