As you may or may not be aware, an ad-hoc Land Use Advisory Group working under the auspices of the Planning Commission is reviewing the draft of Northfield’s new zoning ordinances. The new ordinances are intended to bring our land use regulations in line with our Comprehensive Plan, something we’ve been unable to accomplish with previous revisions. One of the things the advisory group has discussed is how much Northfield would/should/could restrict the use of “franchise architecture”. (continued)

In early Feb. I tested an interactive live blogging tool called CoverItLive and liked it. I’ve not used it since because there’s no wi-fi available (GRRRR) during City Council or School Board meetings, two events that would seem to lend themselves to interactive live blogging. But there’s now an app called PDAnet for my Android / T-Mobile G1/Google phone that allows it to easily be used as a tethered USB modem. (It’s slow, since there’s still no T-Mobile 3G service here in Northfield (GRRR) I plan to try using it tonight for the City Council meeting.
11 am update: I’m doing a test to see if my 2G connection speed will be able to handle it. Ignore for now.

I spotted this wireless access sign last week when I was in Grand Rapids, MN. It’s on Hwy 169 over the Mississippi River bridge, as you approach the Blandin Foundation offices prior to the intersection with Hwy 2. It points to the Grand Rapids Area Library where there’s free wi-fi. I think it would be helpful to have some similar signs at strategic intersections in Northfield. (continued)
