The last week in January, I interviewed three professionals who are trading their know-how for the ingenuity (and, to a certain extent, free labor) of interns from Northfield’s two colleges. One partnership has already led to an art project, transforming discarded steel breadboxes into women’s breastplate armor. And there is promise that another trade could result in two new Web sites that could help boost the careers of local ceramic artists and rock stars.

I just found about about the “soft launch” of the new Ron Griffith Young Leaders Fund. I hope it’s not to early to blog it; the hyperlinks are active, so here goes.
The Fund, developed in partnership with the Northfield Area YMCA, was initiated by Just Food to honor Ron’s service on the Just Food Board of Directors and his leadership contributions to the Northfield area community as a whole. (continued)
My wife Robbie and I made our first visit to the Northfield Culver’s last week and met the franchise owners, Tom Zenk and Julie Zenk. I don’t write restaurant reviews but I was impressed by two things: 1) Tom’s Looney Tunes tie; and 2) that they had a bloodmobile drive card (coming Feb. 27, 8am-1pm) on every table. See my previous blog post on the conversion of Southgate Theater to Culver’s. Here are two more photos of the new interior.
River Valley Vision Center’s Pat O’Neill seems to have chosen the wrong approach with one of Northfield’s men in blue.
The gang at the NEG (Rob Schanilec and Abby Erickson) has spoken: “Here are the results of the Northfield Entertainment Guide and Locally Grown readers’ poll of the Best of Northfield (4-page PDF). Hundreds of ballots and one hands-down winner – that would be you for having such great stuff to choose from! So take a gander at our readers’ picks and get out there and enjoy! And make mental notes for January 2010 when we’ll do it again.” (Update 1:45 PM: Audio of KYMN show discussing the winners added.)
At last week’s Manzone 2009 planning meeting, Mike Herman of Culligan got standing ovation and an award for his contributions of time and manpower for the 2008 and 2009 events. The event is being held this week on Friday, January 30 from 5-9 pm at the Community Resource Bank main branch on Hwy 3. (continued)
Last week I stopped by the Contented Cow to hear the Blue Grass & Old Time Jam session that happens there every Tuesday night at around 7:30 PM. That night, there were many local musicians and a few drop-ins from out-of-town so I took a few photos and captured a 1-minute video. (continued)
I don’t know if the City of Northfield’s 4-year old website can be easily modified (that was the plan when it was created for $85,000) but it clearly needs improvement. So maybe we can help the City by listing the problems we encounter when using the site and making suggestions for improvement. (Although I do blogsites for a living, I would decline bidding on a revamp of the City’s site, just like I declined to bid on a revamp of the Northfield Area Chamber of Commerce’s website.) Betsey Buckheit started her blog last fall when she began running for office and she’s been continuing to blog since she was elected. We now aggregate her blog’s feed on our left sidebar. (We had her as a guest on our show/podcast back in late Nov.)
Here’s a Wordle of her blog that gives you a glimpse of what she’s currently writing about. Click to enlarge. (continued)
