It’s been six weeks since RepJ reporter Bonnie Obremski departed Northfield. Lots has been happening behind the scenes since then to figure out how to best continue RepJ. Here’s the plan.

spotus.logoWith continued support from the new Center for Sustainable Journalism at KSU in Georgia, there’s going to be a Northfield version of Spot.Us, a community-funded reporting project operating in the Bay Area of California under the guidance of founder David Cohn. Their software platform is open-source and, with a lot of help from Ruby on Rails guru, Jared Mehle, I got it up and running yesterday. (continued)

Dusty Budd, Tracy Davis, Ross CurrierAfter a send-off to KYMN Radio News Director Dusty Budd (he departs Northfield for fame and fortune in LA next week), we argued vociferously over the community expectations policy, using language that would actually violate the policy had we been recording the show on the sidewalk. We closed with a similarly heated discussion about the skate park.

In early Feb. I tested an interactive live blogging tool called CoverItLive and liked it.  I’ve not used it since because there’s no wi-fi available (GRRRR) during City Council or School Board meetings, two events that would seem to lend themselves to interactive live blogging.  But there’s now an app called PDAnet for my Android / T-Mobile G1/Google phone that allows it to easily be used as a tethered USB modem. (It’s slow, since there’s still no T-Mobile 3G service here in Northfield (GRRR) I plan to try using it tonight for the City Council meeting.

11 am update: I’m doing a test to see if my 2G connection speed will be able to handle it. Ignore for now.
