Photo album: St. Patrick’s Day parade

Kevin O'Connell, Jim Bohnhoff St. Patrick's Day parade, downtown Northfield Jim Pokorney
Yesterday’s St. Patrick’s Day parade began on downtown’s west side and wound its way over the pedestrian foot bridge, along Riverwalk to Bridge Square, and then back to the Contented Cow‘s outdoor stage area.

The holy trinity of Kevin O’Connell, Jim Bohnhoff, and Jim Pokorney, after many weeks minutes of planning, once again pulled off this great contribution to Northfield’s legacy of community events.

By keeping the parade entirely on pedestrian walkways instead of having it on Division St. as in years past, no street barricades or police were needed. Therefore, organizers were evidently able to avoid having to file an application 45 days ahead of time and pay the $20 fee required by Northfield’s Community Event Policy.

I thought it was better, actually, as the parade participants and the observing crowd were in closer proximity to one another.  People also lingered much longer afterwards on the Riverwalk and around the Cow’s outdoor stage where live music made the gathering all the more festive. Of course, 80-degree weather helped, too.

Robbie and I both took photos. See our large slideshow of 55 photos (recommended) or SLOW CLICK this small slideshow:

Aerial tram studied for Hwy 3 at 3rd St.

tram Encouraged by the reception to their study of a tunnel under the Hwy. 19 railroad crossing (see pages 5-7 of this PDF update), engineers at Bolton and Menk announced this morning that they’re studying the advantages of an aerial tram across Hw3 at 3rd St.

It would connect the Northfield Area Chamber of Commerce to downtown Northfield near Bridge Square.

“We think this is a perfect example of our firm’s ability to ‘think outside the bridge’ said consultant Kris Chroamdoam. "Not only would this solve the problem of connecting both sides of Northfield for pedestrians, it could be a huge tourist attraction.”

Councilor Jim Pokorney, the only member of the Council to vote against the $50,000 study (officially called the Hwy 3 & 19 Multimodal Transportation Study) could not be reached for comment as he reportedly was on his way to visit the Aerial Tram in Portland Oregon.

After Girls Night Out (GNO) 2008, volunteer Ally Beyer emailed me that:

… we raised $1500 for the WINGS group. We are so excited about the outcome of this year’s event! We had almost twice the amount of women as last year. It was fantastic! Also, the committee loves what WINGS is about and we have decided to donate to WINGS every year.

More info and a photo of the GNO donation to WINGS posted to the N.org blog by Joan Behr.
