LINK Center (formerly the Welcome Center) now open in the NCRC

I stopped by the Northfield Community Resource Center (NCRC) on Tuesday and noticed that the new LINK Center had opened. Formerly known as the Welcome Center, LINK is a joint-effort of Growing Up Healthy and the City of Northfield. "The mission of the LINK Center is to connect Northfield community members with resources in Northfield and Rice County."

Mary Ho, former Rice County Director of Public Health, is the LINK Center’s interim director, and Martha Calderon has been hired to staff the information desk. The new logo, linked rings in the City of Northfield’s colors with the Growing Up Healthy logo in the background, was designed by Promise Fellow Jordan Taylor.

Dec. 14 Nfld Patch: LINK Center Partnership Approved by Northfield City Council

With a 4-3 vote, the Council approved an annual payment of $22,100 for three years to help fund a LINK Center, which would connect low-income residents—particularly Northfield’s Latino community—to public services. The idea was received with approving words by all councilors, but Mayor Mary Rossing, joined by councilors Jon Denison and Kris Vohs, dissented over philosophical and budget concerns.

Nov. 5 Nfld News: Council to hear new Welcome Center plan

Like dozens of other Northfielders, [Janet Lewis] Muth felt the city was wrong to eliminate its Welcome Center coordinator position, a decision made this summer as a way to cut costs. Though budgets are tight, proponents of the center said, the coordinator not only provided Spanish translation to Latino immigrants, but a needed connection point for those unfamiliar with available services…

And while the Welcome Center aided mostly Latino residents, the Link Center is expected to serve all newcomers — from other countries and states.

I was out for a leisurely bicycle ride on Wed. night when I came upon the 7th annual Community Youth Fair(s) that was being held outside Bridgewater Elementary, hosted by the Northfield School District’s Community Services Division.

Alas, I only had time for a few photos as Mary Ho, Rhonda Pownell, and Susan Hvistendahl (L to R, center photo above) kept bothering me about the 2010 Census, even though I have it on good authority that these types of people should be avoided.

[I don’t why there was no mention of this event on the Community Services Division website nor via their Key Communicator emails. Nor was there any mention of it on the Northfield HCI blog, nor the Kid Happenings Northfield Public Library blog, nor the City of Northfield calendar, nor an article or press release in the Northfield News. All I found was this Aug. 12 blog post on Northfield.org with a non-PDF flyer attached.]
